Moving to Haslemere in Surrey

Hi mate, I’m at Hindhead and it is indeed incredible. The waiting list is probably 2-3 years atm? Costs quoted were right for 2024.

Blackmoor is a great recommendation for an alternative. I think it’s much better than West Surrey.

Puttenham probably on lower end of price spectrum? But not in the same league as any above.

You got Old thorns just down the road , buts its more a Hotel/resort course so not sure on members Comps etc
Or Petersfield GC about 20 mins drive , Ive only played it once but seemed ok , the guy over the road is a member and enjoys it

Old Thorns is decent enough, but as you say it's a resort, they do run members comps but the resort guests are always going to be the primary focus. I also may have just been unlucky when visiting it with the weird weather lately, but it seems to be in a bit of decline with regards to condition to how it used to be. The other comment I would make is that it's definitely a challenging layout, but you won't be hitting many drivers off the tee because the shapes of the holes, that may not be a problem, but worth bearing in mind.

Out of all the options suggested in no particular order I'd have Blackmoor, Liphook and Hindhead as my top 3.

I thought they all had waiting lists ??

Good things are worth waiting for. I'd rather joining a waiting list for one of these clubs than compromise to avoid a wait, but everyone has their own opinion on whether they'd be happy to do this. You could probably join all 3 waiting lists and see which comes up first.

Plenty of of other local options to play whilst waiting too.

I could probably justify the £2k membership, but the joining fee is the real killer. I guess that’s why they do it, to weed out the undesirables such as myself.

I did look at Old Thorns, but from past experience, resort courses get battered, and they lack the quality of a dedicated golf club.

Joining the waiting list would be fine, but they all seem to charge about £200 for the privilege. I guess my options are, get a higher paying job, or temper my expectations.

What does someone do in the meantime? Do they join it and then join a course with no waiting list just to play until then? If it's a long wait

Yes. Find the next best option. But you might end up liking it so much you stay put!

This is the Surrey/Hants/Sussex Borders. Loads of options. Even the rubbish ones are better than in some counties.

Play the long game. He's got blooming Hindhead / Liphook/ Blackmoor on his doorstep. A 2 or 3 year wait is nothing in the context of things. There's plenty of other courses to get in as a stop gap.

Purely personal view of course. Other folk have other priorities and constraints, I appreciate that.

Be worth checking if the £200 comes off the joining fee.

I’m currently on a waiting list, but have to be a social member to be on it. It’s £120 a year, but it comes off the joining fee so I just see it as taking a bit off the JF

Im at Hindhead, fees are going up again this year as they are everywhere. Joining will be nearer £4k and subs near £2.5k once the bar levy is added. There’s about a 2 year wait.

Blackmoor is a good alternative, it’ll be a bit cheaper. It has a better range compared to Hindhead but the course isn’t anywhere near as good. I believe there’s a waiting list here also but not sure how long now.

Liphook is similar in fees to Hindhead but harder to get in, membership is nowhere near as friendly as HH and Blackmoor.

West Surrey seems like it’ll fit the best but beware winter, it struggles to drain and is mostly on clay.

Lastly, Puttenham. Will be bang on budget it’s friendly enough and is in decent condition. It’s tight in places but the greens are always great.

Blackmoor membership is £2100, and I think the joining fee is £3050. Not sure how long waiting list is, but worth asking.

Course has had £500,000 spent on bunkering, heather, drainage etc in last two years, and looks great. Don’t be fooled by yardage it plays longer being nearly 6,200 yards but only a par 69. Great variety of holes, and some stunning par 3,s. Harry Colt seemed to know a thing or two about course design. You need to think your way round, and not just smash driver. You will need a good short game to score well.

Personally think along with Hankley the best draining course in the area, so winter golf is not a problem.

Dont get me wrong, Blackmoor is worth every penny, played last year and the exceptional holes like 10 are gobsmackingly good. Sign of the times I think as I'm sure only a few years ago it was significantly cheaper.

And for me it’s the best club in the area

"Club?" possibly! ;)

If I moved back "home" and lived in Haslemere (is The Swan still open?) I'd be after Hankley or Hindhead with Blackmoor a close call. I might even prefer Blackmoor to Hindhead, who knows?

Strewth, and only a short hop to Liphook too!

Spoilt for choice round there you swines! :ROFLMAO:

Totally agree, and everywhere seems to have been much cheaper before the post covid outdoor boom!
