Mcilroy somewhat wrong over Olympic golf

But your solution wouldn't please the non Olympic fans - it's a solution that pleases Olympic fans - Premiership fans would complain loudly about the coverage they want moving - and move Eastenders to BBC2 and the millions that watch that would complain - you won't please them all.

The BBC provided fantastic coverage of every single sport at the Olympics - some times you had to flip the channel ( hardship pressing a button ) - it's all without adverts

Split it to the other stations isn't the perfect solution you then get adverts and then the complaints happen still !

There is no perfect solution but if they biggest issue is that someone has to turn the channel over for 30 mins then I think they are doing a pretty damn good job if you ask me.

BBC allows us to watch the greatest sport show on the planet without one single betting advert in site

Have to agree with this.

No matter how popular a programme or event may be there is none (not Strictly, Bake Off, EastEnders or Olympics) that will be viewed by the majority of the population.

As you say the BBC has a remit to provide programming for the country as a whole so will always have to make compromises which will inevitably upset some.

Personally I find the Olympics, other than athletics, a complete bore but I accept that the Beeb has to provide broader coverage whilst still satisfying those with even less interest in Olympics than myself.

It is a constant frustration that the BBC class the red button and 5 live Sports Extra as acceptable coverage. Not everyone has access to, or can afford, the broadband speeds needed to watch these things and not everyone has access to digital radio.

I had to laugh the other evening when 5 live were interviewing members of the ladies hockey team. Spent the whole interview telling them how wonderful it was, how unique, how historic and how great for the sport it was that they won whilst conveniently glossing over the fact that they bumped the commentary on to sports extra to make way for a Friday night premiership game.

Whilst I agree that switching channels is no great hardship, neither is saying that BBC1 will be showing the Olympics all evening and Eastenders will be on BBC2 for 2 weeks whilst BBC1 shows the greatest sporting show on earth. But whilst I also have some sympathy for your point about 5 live, as my heart sank when I heard they would be having the footy on instead, I believe they did put the 3rd and 4th quarters on 5 Live once the footy had finished.

I think the BBC did take heed of the complaints about switching channels as towards the end there were at least 2 occasions I saw where the 10 O clock news was delayed, in one case for up to an hour, to show the cycling and possibly hockey. Instead of switching to BBC2 in the middle of the action as they had done before.

And the BBC got thousands of complaints about delaying the BBC News - believe there was also an article in the papers complaining about delaying news at ten saying it was more important than Kenny going for gold

For all it's issues and whether it has adverts or not, I thought the BBC coverage was superb, loads of choice on red button, iplayer, net, radio all added to the BBC1, 2 and 4 and repeated early morning.

Olympics is once every 4 years, premiership is every week. Ditch the football to sports extra for this 2 week period and focus on the Olympics. Simple. Oh and keep the Olympics coverage either on BBC 1 or BBC2 and move the rest of the scheduling to the other channel. If people want to hark on about how important it is that the Olympics is on free to air TV then the channels involved have to make sacrifices to show full coverage.

The perfect solution, split the rights between all 5 terrestrial channels then you get all coverage live on terrestrial TV. Split the Radio coverage between stations that broadcast nationally on an analogue signal and you get the same, full coverage.

To be honest that sounds like an absolute nightmare as you would not have a clue what channel to watch or what radio station to tune into to see or hear what you wanted to. That's if you could actually hear anything during the night on medium wave.

To put this into context seeing as it was me that brought it up about the BBC being rubbish at times, but most of the time brilliant. If the same happened with the World Cup that you had to switch over after 20 minutes into the game from BBC 1 to BBC 2 3 or 4 and then once we find out who is Britanys kids dad is then 30 minutes later we have to change back. Then everyone would be kicking off. The news fits around the football at the World Cup, including extra time. When the World Cup kicks off, all schedules fit around the games. It should of been the same for Olympic, hockey, tennis and golf. The Olympics has the same kudos if not more than football and should be given the same respect.

They delayed the news for the Olympics a number of times

Football Matches only last for 90 mins - the Olympics was for over 12 hours each day and there were plenty of breaks between events - even the channel was switched in between a hockey match you wouldn't have missed anything as the coverage started on the other channel before anything was turned off

They don't change much for things like the Euro's or World Cup and the coverage is shared between channels so it's not every single night

The news has been changed for the football (WC finals, CL finals etc) and it wasn't such a rarity that it was moved, especially given the fact team GB were involved in gold medal events. I found the coverage disjointed at times, having to switch from one to channel to another, and to be honest there was very little update on what was currently being shown on the red button. There could be an argument in 2020 to bring BBC Three back from an online only module and with BBC Four use these and BBC as dedicated channels. That would leave BBC One for the entertainment shows and news and would seem a sufficient compromise to keep as many people happy as possible

I suspect that there may well be a stipulation when awarding the contract to televise the Olympics that they are shown on the main channels accessible to the most number of viewers. I know there is no technical reason why, but if you put the same program on BBC1 and BBC4 it will get a massive number of extra viewers if it was on BBC1.

Anyway the BBC have lost the exclusive rights to the Olympics from 2018 to the Discovery Channel who bought the rights across Europe. I think at one stage Discovery was toying with the idea of putting it all on their free to air channel, but thankfully decided not to. So the BBC (after going into a fight for them with ITV) has secured a deal with Discovery to show most of the stuff still till at least 2024, but Discovery channel have the rights to use Pay TV as well if they want to. So from now on the BBC will still have enough to fill 2 channels with live stuff and highlights, but probably not be showing as comprehensive coverage as they have been doing with all the sports on the red button.

Personally I think this is a good thing as IMHO the Olympics needs to be on free to air TV in this country and I would not want it to follow the example of most other sports by going mostly onto pay TV. But I imagine the BBC could not of afforded it on their own in the future, so teaming up with a massive TV company is the best way forwards.

Or we could listen to the Players themselves, McIlroy, Spieth, Day and Johnson all looking forward to 2020 and all stating yesterday it would be in their targets when interviewed by USA today,

Maybe those 4 take a little 'something' that's ok for golf but not ok for the Olympic testers and by 2020 they'll have time to get the balance right?

Maybe not if you are watching something live but a major pain in the butt when you are out and have set up your system to record a programme, only to find that it has recorded something completely different.

It will be even better when he stops making the stupid statments in the first place. I don't want a robot speaking, Tiger Woods showed how dull that can be, but Rory is old enough and smart enough to think first before speaking and should answer with a bit more intelligence. However, I would agree that accepting you made an error rather than blindly blustering on is the right thing to do and so good on him.

Couldnt agree more
