I'm not sure that they were far out.
Iirc, they were waiting to play their second shots into 15.
There were plenty of very slow players ahead of them, particularly (but not exclusively) the amateur.
Baseball is bringing in a pitch clock this season. If it's successful, I wonder if there'll be more presure to speed up golf?
Fair enough....I saw Bennett wasn't the fastest in the field but, from what's being said on SM, Cantlay was glacial

10 times Mickelson has finished in the top 3 places at The Masters - and won it 3 times.

Apart from his three wins, Faldo never finished in the top 10 at The Masters.

Faldo finished in the top 3 places in all four majors a total of 11 times. Mickelson has finished in the top 3 places at all four majors 25 times.

Lefty back up to 72nd in the OWGR from a lowly 425th.
Nobody batted an eyelid about him wearing his LIV gear either, so a successful day out all round for Phil. ;)

I'm not defending Cantlay in general (he's unwatchably dreadful), but I think by the official definition of being "too slow" he wasn't .
The problem was that we saw quite a lot of him. Plus I think the tv producers normally clip his putting process down a bit before showing him.
As for the am, I only saw him on 16, and he had the Sergio regripping going on.

The speed of professional golf is the embodiment of boiled frog syndrome. It's just gradually got worse and worse without anything being done about it.
It's up to the 2 opens and the masters to do something, because the tours are player organisations and quite frankly their mindset is entirely self-centered.

So the question is...
Cantlay and Hovlund were obviously out of position....we're they on the clock?
If not why not
And if they were why no penalties...?
I think GM should ask some questions.....
Rarely are slow play penalties given.
A player should make a stroke in no more than 40 seconds (and usually in less time) after the player is able to play without interference or distraction.
Spieth takes minutes just talking with his caddie or to himself about possible scenarios. They should be penalised imo.
There are rules on this but it seems be be ignored.

Is the rule not 40 seconds once a player or group is put on the clock.

10 little bets I had, not a single one came in. Some absolute bankers in there as well, Jason Day I’m looking at you! This is why I don’t gamble!

Or grimace, slow shuffle, sweaty face, patented gum chew, or inevitable ride on the golf cart.

McIlroy to miss cut @ 9/1
McIlroy to win @ 8/1
Koepka to be top LIV golfer @ 7/1
McClean to be top amateur @ 14/1

Didn't really want to be right about Woods, whilst not a major fan of Woods as a person due to of-course things, those pictures on Saturday were heartbreaking.

Also didn't want McIlroy to miss the cut, but coupled with Koepka being equal top LIV invitee, it's time to go Driver shopping!

Pace of play - There was a suggestion Rahm and Koepka may have had a word with Bennet on Saturday, but between Bennet and Cantlay on Sunday, it wasn't good. Hovland even played out of turn - but I don't think pace had anything to do with Hovlands or Koepkas performance.

Brilliant by Rahm. Don't like Phil M either, but what a final day he had. There was scores to be had at Augusta, particularly day 1, and with a favourable draw McIlroy should not have been struggling - if last years final day was the catalyst for his season, not sure what happens to him here on in. Messing about with drivers, wedges and putters leading up to and after the Players was nuts. Having Rotella on speed dial is nuts. I suppose we'll get to see his reaction at Heritage this week but even if he wins on Tour again this year, I think he probably needs to add at least one major because that's where the question mark is.

Was a good Masters , won’t go down as a classic

The way Koepka and Rahm interacted was nice to see ,still think Koepka will be the first to look to move back to the PGAT.

In fact wonder how many of the younger players will be having second thoughts.

Really solid play from Rahm - he looked very comfortable all day and very happy to see another European win.

Great charge from Spieth but as with Mickleson just too much to do

I've just chosen this year's unlucky victims and placed my bets.

Rahm win.
Young, Homa, Zalatoris, Burns and Hoge each ways.
Scheffler first round leader.
Rahm and Young came in so ended up winning £45. (I only put a couple of quid on each so not a bad return.)

Won a wee bet amongst my friends.

3 players with odds totaling 100-1 or more.

Went for Rahm, scotty and kirk.

Lovely.

Was looking dodgy for a while with the weather, some big names struggling and only two guys in serious contention going into the final round but turned into a very good masters and a great final day. Two great players facing off and a bunch of others free-wheeling and getting close enough to cash in if the leaders faltered.

That Spieth/Mickelson pairing must have been some watch and good to get a reminder that Phil can still play a bit.

I liked the new 13th - lots of players laid up but a good drive still allowed you to go for it and nice to see guys hitting timber into that green again. A proper risk/reward once more.

Positives for Liv, I think, reminding us that they have some big time players that can still be competitive but a bit sad for golf that these guys aren't there week in week out any more. But also some surprising failures - thought DJ and Cam would be more of a factor. Will be interesting to see how they go in the rest of the majors. Not sure what that means for the OWGR - rankings for these guys are clearly out of kilter but I'm not sure how you rate the Liv events as they're nowhere near the strength and depth of PGA / DP World tours. I don't envy whoever is tasked with updating the system, seems like a no-win situation for them.

Good to see Brooks back healthy. Played great for three days and it was hard to see him losing it at one point but impossible not to wonder if a lack of competitive golf contributed to his choking yesterday.

Rory.... gah.... hate to admit it but I think he's just not going to get a green jacket. Seems to be in his head now, just can't bring his best form to Augusta.

Delighted for John Rahm - hard to believe he only had one major before this. Expect him to pick up at least one more this year!
I think your last 2 paragraphs sum up golf and how good Rory has been.
He may well never get the green Jacket, but he has been fantastically successful even if he doesn’t.

We assume the big names will all get loads of majors, but Rahm only has 2 to date, as has DJ, Norman etc
Indeed, only 19 men have won more than Rory.
