So, Neil, Alex and Mike were talking to Monty the other day and he admitted that he finds it hard to spend money. Top pros will be the same, they get all their bills picked up for them etc, and that's understandable.

However, if they are playing four rounds at the weekend i'd like to see them pay green fees in the pro shop before they go out. Who's with me?

Im sure most clubs in this economic climate coud do with the extra cash.
This is a prime example of the rich getting richer because a ot of things are free.
Most clubs also support a charity, whats stopping the pro digging deep and
supporting a local charity.
The love of money breeds greed.
Ask Tiger Woods why he felt he needed another million quid recently as an appearence fee.
He could live to a 1000 and never spend all his money, pure greed.
Of course they all do their bit for charitys, but supporting a local charity where they play
would also be a nice gesture.

Apart from the one's who get appearance money dont they have to pay a fee to enter anyway, and they might not even make the cut? I can understand what Monty is saying and I would think that this would be the same with other Celebs not having to pay for a lot of things like us mere mortals have to.

Let's be honest here, it's not as if they are playing at our local golf club where the extra cash would come in handy, instead they are playing the most exclusive courses around the world who don't really need the cash as we all want to play them because the pro's do. And what about poor old Jason having to pay green fees everywhere, or Bob for that matter!!!

I think you'll find that PGA pro's get courtesy at most other courses Tiger.

yup, whenever i invite my neigbour out, he reminds me that he doesnt pay green fees. Anywhere! (i think if he did have to pay, he wouldnt play that course) fair play in my opinion, its not exactly easy to become a PGA pro is it!!

Rather disingenuous to say that pros "can't" spend money. If they are so riddled with guilt at not paying green fees or or buying their own lunch, there's nothing to stop them sticking some dosh in the Captain's charity tin or donating some old gear to the junior section. I'm sure many do this sort of thing, so in the end maybe they do pay their way, just in kind rather than hard cash.

Are you talking about Pro's in general or those on the PGA and European Tour having to pay the green fee to play in the competition?

It would be a bit like the premier league charging players entrance fees to the ground. The players are there to attract spectators and sponsors to generate funds for the PGA and the course, whilst the fees are not excessive for those at the top, the ones at the bottom end of the ladder would probably lose out - Knut Borsheim made 1493.00 euros last year - would just about cover a fee green fees at the Top courses without then considering travel and accomodation

Why????????????????????????????

He spent a fair bit on his divorce.

According to a Tour Caddy mate, who was apparently there, Monty signed divorce papers at breakfast at a tournament, then described it to the 'rats' as the most expensive breakfast he'd ever had! So he definitely has a sense of humour!

As for Pros paying.. It's one of the few 'perks' they get. They would never be able to play at other courses otherwise. Club Pros would have to make some arrangement for cover as well, which could cost them cash too.
And there's an expectation that there'll be an invite in the other direction also. So it's pretty much like inviting mates to Dinner really - would you charge them for that?

each competition could have a different cost, I posted last week about the US Open, its $150 this year

ot a lot when you think of the prestige and coverage. a 36 holer at Dundonald this year is about £95 for us amateurs, around $135

there you go then. $150 dollars a man is not going to make a dent in the total prize money. it may be a sizeable amount to the pro struggleing to hold his card but the same rules apply to the uber rich tour pro too. i would like to think that a certain Mr Woods would be refused entry if he happened to forget his wallet. ;)

remember even last place at the US Open you prob get $20 grand.

I understood all pro's in UK have complimentary free rights to play any course in the UK subject to availability
