Hi guys.

Been playing golf for probably 19 years on and off. But these days I'm much more off than on and maybe only play 5 or 6 times a year :( (this may change though!)

Still play with absolutely ancient Ben Sayers Regal blades and to be fair I hit them OK but as you can imagine with my lack of practice when I hit them bad I really hit them bad :) Also tend to suffer with my hands getting fatigued midway through the round as you truly do feel everything through them....

Thinking of treating myself to a new set of irons but I want some with forgiveness whilst still looking at least somewhat like a blade at address. Also want irons from 3 up as I just haven't yet bought into this hybrid/rescue thing :)

Obviously I don't play enough to want to spend an absolute fortune but the MacGregors at £199 and the Wilsons at around £249 look pretty good and i guess they'd fit the bill.

Anyone hit them and got opinions on how forgiving they are? I would like to get as much forgiveness as I can but without resorting to oversized huge topline types.

njc.

p.s, More than interested in other club suggestions too ;-)

Welcome to the forum mate, if I was you I would go for some cavity back irons like the Di7 irons, they don't look big and are good looking clubs and will plummet in price very soon with the release of the Di9.

Cheers for the welcome.

Will make a point of having a look at the Di7s at the weekend.

Must admit though I'm not sure I fancy the whole fatshaft thing. I'm just so used to looking down at a classic blade that I lose confidence at address if I'm looking down at an exaggerated shaft or a huge game improvement type head etc.

i see they're currently available at £235, would you expect them to go much lower then?

I reckon you could get them for about £180 - 200 in a few weekd. Have a look at the Taylor made R7 + Callaway X-20.

MacGregor stuff is always under rated, but they are a quality brand (I think they are now the oldest surviving golf club manufacturer).

I had (have) a set of MacG blades, and they are lovely.

I think you may be amking the game unnecessarily difficult by insisting on looking down at a bladed club. If you want a thin top line there are numerous better player clubs that still have cavities although for my two penneth if you don't play very often you are better off moving to a proper cavity backed club which will give you more forgiveness (saving pains in your hand) and greater reward for off centre shots

I'm certainly looking for some game improvement and not at all unhappy with a cavity back. What other suggestions do you have for a club with a thin top line but extra forgiveness?

I do tend to strike all of the irons pretty well and though I'm not shooting great scores I'm wasting my shots around or on the green or playing out sideways from poor drives etc.

I played last week for the first time in 2 years and I believe I hit 7 GIR and didn't have too many problems off the fairways at all really. I'll also often hit a 3 iron off the tee on par 4s that are up to 400 yards so my iron play tends to be the better part of my game. Hence my desire to find something that still inspires my confidence yet just helps a bit (not necessarily a lot) more.

I tested the Wilson Staff Ci7's for GM and have only got good things to say about them. To me (off 15) they feel very powerful out of the middle but are also very forgiving on off centre hits. They do have a cavity back but to me it is not too offputting.

Unless your cash is burning a hole in your pocket you really don't want to spend more than about £200 for some cavity backs, particularly if you're going to play half a dozen times a year. As for which is best - you wont know until you try some for yourself.

Fair point.

That said though, given that my current irons have been with me since I was 16 (now 35) I'm not too hung up on the price as they'll likely last me a good while.

Will probably pop into AG or similar and hit some Ci7s when I get a chance and also A/B them with some much more forgiving clubs and see how I feel about them then.

njc.

p.s, I'm hoping to get out a bit more regularly than I have been doing also ;)

My last reply to a q? about macgregor.....almost!!!

"Are the MacGregors a forged club? (like my 565)
If so....there's no competition....

I love my irons....sweeter than a sweet thing smeared in honey....

DG stock "old-season" MacGregor gear and have no choice but to flog it for silly money, as they don't have the cache of Mizuno or Cally or Ping.

I had some CAST clubs, bought custom fitted and everything......they are not close to the forged MacGregors in any catagory.....

I'm totally biased, of course, but did I do the right thing to get a discount set of unloved MacGregors? YES"

Best thing I ever did was to go with a set of bargain Macgregors.....

I like the Ci7 b.t.w.
