I am thinking about a driver change, I want something that will give me a lower trajectory and then some roll out.
I currently play a Nike square head (10.5* stiff) that has helped me to find a lot more fairways as I went through the process of tweaking my swing. I understand this club is all about forgiveness and with its head weighting probably promotes a high ball flight.
How does the club head and then the shaft spec (not just reg v stiff) change the flight of the ball?
Does a particular brand (head & shaft) give lower flight and roll or is it my swing?

thanks

With the modern driver and modern ball - the emphasis is towards a higher ball flight, as it makes the ball go further....TBH I would stick with what you have rather than messing around if you can find the fairways and perhaps practice on taking 2 or 3 from 100 yards in instead of 3 or 4.....that will lower your scores.....

Try teeing the ball lower.

Not sure about that, teeing it lower encourages a downward hit creating backspin, with driver you want to sweep away on a slight upswing and a higher teed ball encourages that and produces less backspin.

There are shafts that will fly the ball lower in the same way that there are Hi-launch ones - assuming the shaft is right for you.
The Grafalloy Prolaunch Red does give a lower than normal flight compared to others - again it changes from person to person.
if you really want to change, as ever, the advice is to try them all out.

As said - just Tee it lower.

Im still getting used to my new 909 D2, and yesterday was driving the ball very low, until I simply upped my tee Height and suddenly was getting a higher trajectory.

To be honest, unless you go for a full Custom Fitting session at Titleist/Ping etc, (NOT AG), you really have no idea of what shaft/head combination will be best for you, its all hit& miss otherwise.
If you get on with your Driver, just play with the Tee Height for different trajectories, but I have to tell you that even at Titleist, 'Hang Time' is the word, and generally what will give you more yards.

Sure, into a wind you might want a lower ball flight, but it isnt necessarily gonna give you what you hope.

What I would ask is ...
What standard do you play at?
What distance do you currently get from driver?
How often do you hit fairways with current driver?
What do you hope to achieve by changing it?

Before I would attempt any suggestions.

I am regularly scoring rounds in the low 80's
I hit my current driver around 250 yards on a calm day. This is mostly in the air, so when playing in the wind which is often on the links in Aberdeen I lose distance
I am hitting fairways/rough first cut more regularly, i dont have actual stats as i dont record this detail
I hope to not lose so much distance when playing in the wind and gain some roll when the ball lands.

thanks

I'd look at moving it back a tad first and experimenting with ball position before anything radical like buying a new driver. Without going into a C/F session its going to be difficult to find an off the shelf solution that will give you 100% consistancy in terms of the flight you are after. If you are regularly hitting the short stuff stick with what you have.

Chap...I think you are trying to beat the laws of physics here....I assume you don't have to play all the holes into the wind...take the rough with the smooth and into the wind just face it that you, along with everyone else, is going to be hitting 2,3,4... clubs more into the green....

I would be happy with what you just said but if you want more dist into the wind you have already got a couple of tips that dont require a new club, but if you get 250 into the wind will you change your 3w for the next 220 to the green? :D

I play on a windy course and all I do for a lower flight with the driver is grip down an inch. The less adjustments you make the better. Make sure you swing thru to a full finish.

For irons I take one club longer and grip down. Be wary of moving ball back too much as this can get you coming in too steep and you can end up with a weak high cut.

He's right!! Great shafts.
I have them fitted to my G10 woods, and I am getting a much lower trajectory on my 3 wood now compared to my old Callaways. My driver is going higher but that's because I've gone back to 10.5 degrees rather than my old 9 degree one. Completely sold on the shafts though.
