Lob wedges-are they with it?

I've got a 60 degree vokey lying around I'd be willing to part with for not too much money if you fancy.

I think most people deloft their club when chipping so much that a 60* is more like a 54*.

I can flop and stop with my 56* because I worked on a technique that retains the loft at impact, after a LOT of thins I eventually got the hang of it. My pro now keeps complimenting me on the quality of my chipping technique every time he sees me practising!

Why on earth would a 7.6 golfer ask the opinion of the majority of the rabbits and mid handicappers on this forum? If you are off 7.6 then you should be more than capable of getting it around the course. It's us that need your help not the other way around ;)

There's no reason why anyone can't use a 58/60 wedge - even hit full tilt, it's exactly the same as hitting a 7 iron....
It just takes getting used to
Most people who say they can't use one probably don't practice enough with them. either on or off the course.

I wouldn't be without my 60 degree wedge especially when the ground gets hard and you are 30-50 yds from the green and pitch and run or pitching just short of the green is too risky. It's also brilliant out of bunkers when there's no sand in them however different people use their clubs in different ways and you have to find what works for you.

Lol db. I was trying to garner opinion on the benefit of a 60 think it spiralled lol

it tends to when wedges get discussed!

fwiw I have the same bag as you with both a 4H 22 and a 60/6 - basically I make the call on whether to carry the 4i or the LW based on the course, conditions and how I feel :)

Thanks Duncan, what benefit do u find with the 60 over the 56?
Just had one out with me for 9 holes and I liked it, but the shots I used it for I could have used other clubs as I have previous, would like it maybe for a month or so to see if it becomes more useful. Also had an hour on range/ short game area and I do like it :)

Yup, there is the technique is better than extra loft gang, like me. And the other lot who are for higher lofts to save shots.

I would always recommend people get a lesson first to get the most out of the clubs they have rather than investing in a more lofted club.

Others would say to get more height and more stop you just need a more lofted club. It will save you shots every round.

In a way we are both right.

they are different animals - one has a lot of bounce, a relatively heavy swing weight (to every other club in the bag) and has 56 degree loft which, for me, means it's underlying carry is (now, it's gone up) 82.......the other has 60 degrees, feels light/normal, and has an underlying carry of 70. It's really usefull for any bunkers other than fluffy sand, and gives me confidence with higher shots off tighter lies.

I have a lot of sympathy with the view that the actual distance it carries is a slightly false comfort - how often will you end up needing exactly 70 yds (if you did it deliberately you caould have left 82)? however, my feeling is that for any shot below 70 that requires a specific carry and quick stop the more lofted club has merit - if it doesn't need carry/stop I probably won't be using a wedge at all :)

It's not unknown for me to leave the 56 out if I see a course with little/wet sand in the bunkers and a number of short tight par 4's and 180yd par 3s. I just feel better out there having made a positive decision about my weapons of choice on the day.

I am not a fan of a LW. I just feel that a 58 can do everything a LW can do and is a more versatile club. Even with a reasonable technique, I can think of very few occasions when a LW would be the absolute go to club. If you are happy using one then clearly you feel they are a shot saver. I've had one, tried it for a couple of seasons and didn't get on with it.

In my book a 58 IS a lob wedge, do you really think 2 degrees makes that much difference? How exactly is a 58 deg club more versatile than a 60 deg club exactly? I am confused Homer mate!

In my book 58 is an out and out SW and not a LW. I can play more shots with the 58 in terms of trajectory and distance than I can with a LW primarily because a LW will go maybe 50-60 flat out. I can hit a 3/4 58 or open the face to get more spin and stop quicker. I can close the face and get it in lower over a longer distance. Basically the 58 gives more options for my own game. If you can do more with your LW then go for it

Anything more than a 56 to me is a lob wedge. I use a 47, 53 and a 58. 53 is my main bunker club around the greens, 58 only comes out for either solid 90 yard shot or half distance or less lob over trouble.

I honestly think if somebody nicked your 58 deg and replaced it with the same model of club in 60 deg in the same bounce, you might never notice the difference mate! I get your point about hitting 3/4 and opening the face, but I can do the same with my 60 and if I want a lower flight with a bit more roll I can play the ball back in my stance and lean the shaft more. 2 degrees is not really that much of a difference! Sorry for the rant Homer, nowt personal bud! ;)
