At the moment I have 13 clubs in the bag,
Driver 250+
3wood 230
19 deg hybrid 215
4i 195
5i 185
6i 175
7i 160
8i 150
9i 135
Pw 125
52 110
56 95
The yardages are what I would use if I had a shot of that distance in still conditions.

So, I possibly have a gap for a 3i or another hybrid or the lob wedge?

Tried lob wedges before and had mixed results , after working hard on my short game and loving my Cleveland 588 wedges I have a little confidence back and have toyed with the idea of a 60. Not sure I need a 3i or equivalent as I can lay off the hybrid or step on the 4, but also I can play most shots with the 56 or 52 inside 100 so is it worth buying a 60?

Sorry for the long post just looking for opinions

Thanks

I have 50, 55 and a 60. I'm lucky if I use the 60 more than twice a round - the 56 does everything I need.

Thinking of dropping the 60 for a 4 hybrid.

Its worth about 3 shots a round to me. 1 st name on the team sheet.

I was home in ireland later last week and played 4 times. Only managed to get someones old 60 by the last game. It saved me a handfull of shots.

If you take the time to learn how to use it then it becomes a serious weapon.

I have only just added a 60 deg after using a 56 as my highest lofted club for ages.I use it for chips with a super soft landing when the pin position demands it, it comes in very useful! Occasionally used for bunker shots with a high lip too.

at 7.6 I think you would have the skills to deal with them, the average 20 hcp would be better out without one though.
Just remember to get the right bounce for your type of course.

For me, an average club golfer doesn't need any more than 58* on a wedge.

58 is a lob wedge. It makes sense for jt77 to for for a 60 as a 58 would be too close to his sand wedge.

Tell me this gareth, is their much difference length wise between your 19 hybrid and 3 iron? Id say you could easily drop one or the other and give yourself more options greenside.

Well, if you take into consideration my 3 iron has 21* of loft and a 38.3/4" shaft and my hybrid has 19* of loft and a 39.1/2 (3/4" diff in shaft length and 2* of loft difference) then, yes, I have a distance gap of around 12-15 yards depending how I strike it.

Id say you could easily drop one or the other and give yourself more options greenside.

Just curious, but why do I need more options greenside?

I can/do chip with anything from a 7 iron to a 58* wedge from greenside. I can get out of some pretty deep bunkers around my track by laying my 58* wedge open. I even got out of a plugged lie in a deep bunker yesterday without opening the face of my 58* up.

I can chip over a greenside bunker with a 52 and still get a little check

If I want a little more height on my shots I'll move the ball forward in my stance or, depending what I want to achieve, open the face a touch.

How many options inside 80 yards do I need? If I cant get the ball close from greenside with clubs ranging from a 7 iron to a 58* wedge, then I think I should take up snooker :D

Question for you.

Would you buy this from Dr Knockdown?

If not, why not.

Mn I meant worth it in me title lol blooming auto correct on my phone :)
Not sure it's about coping more what advantage would it give ?
Thanks

Yeah I guessed, just feeling silly and couldn't resist it. :D

I used to carry one but swapped it out for a hybrid which I found was more useful, as I could play most shots I was using the LW for with my SW. It did come in useful now and again though, e.g if I was short sided with a bunker to go over. Very rarely used it for a full shot.

I used both a high bounce one which was good out of long grass and deep bunkers, but then with a lot of hot summers (remember them?), switched to a low bounce one which was useful when bunkers were a bit hard packed or off a hard pan lie round the green.

As you have room in the bag why not get one and see how it goes. You can probably pick up something decent without spending too much and it might end up being your favourite club.

You will need to practice with it a lot though to get the best out of it.

I'd agree with this. Too many wedges for average Joe will just cause confusion. I do most of my chipping with 8,9 & PW.

As an aside, just because you're allowed 14 clubs, doesn't mean to say you NEED to carry 14 clubs...

id love a go at it. don't think it will be any use. its too much for a chip and a full shot would go maybe 10 yards.

My first ever wedge was a 60 deg, bought only because it was cheap, and I needed something to go with my 6 iron and putter. With these 3 clubs I played my first ever full round, and I still managed to break 100! A lot of people assume that you need to be a great golfer to benefit from using a 60 deg, but I don't agree. Everybody swings in a different way, and everybody has strengths and weaknesses in their game, regardless of handicap or experience, so some people will be able to use different clubs better than others. I have always had a better short game and struggled with my longer clubs, hence why I am not using anything longer than my 5 wood or 17 deg hybrid at the moment. I prefer to have a choice of lofts and bounces at the other end of my bag, as this suits my game better. If you fancy a 60 deg lob then why not buy a cheap one and find out? Cleveland CG15s can be had for around £30 at the moment! Get stuck in mate, the only person that can really say if a particular club is correct for you is you! All the best.

I've hit a 73* (it was fun) that a mate bought to see whether it helped his game. He had no club for under 110 at the time! He's now acquired an altogether much more normal swing but can still be up to 4 clubs longer than me!

Thanks deke :)

I realise I don't need 14. I'm just looking at options really and because I have space thought I may look at one, also doesn't mean I will buy one. If I do it will be the same as the other two as I like them.

My pleasure mate! I really love wedges and the short game in general. Mizuno wedges were always my preferred choice, but after some tinkering with Cleveland and Vokeys, I have now settled on a Vokey set. If I eventually get better with my long clubs I might even go to a 48/54/60 line up, I loooooove 60 deg wedges! :whoo:

Lots of people find it hard to use a LW , I personally think you need one, I might be a little bias though because i can hit my 62 degree 75 yards and use it for often for my 2nd shots on small par 4s

There are some situations that i find my SW just will not do, and of course I'm talking about height, Behind a tree behind a bush, Pin placements where any kind of roll is going to leave a 2 mile putt.

For me its a yes, but i know so many people that just stick with the 56 its not a bad thing at all, but more options are better then fewer for me
