Afternoon all,

Being a relative novice in the world of golf :)

( played a few par 3's and the odd range session over the past 8 years )

The question I have is this, before practising and getting used to my recently purchased clubs do people think it would be beneficial to have a half hour "beginers" lesson at the range to correct any basic errors I may be making before they become part of my game ?
Or should I get used to my clubs first and back into the swing of things ,then maybe a lesson or two in the spring ..

Any thoughts most welcome
Jamie.

Hi mungo

If I had my time again, i'd defo have lessons very early on. I played for about 2 years without lessons and "grooved" a very bad swing. I would sugest a couple of lessons for the basics then practice then more lessons in the spring.

Hi Jamie

Go for the lessons now! Before you get in to all the bad habits us hackers have.

I still visit the pro every couple of months or so and it is just amazing how quickly they can correct basic errors.

I know as a beginner you will probably feel nervous but honestly I have found all the pros I have used very patient and understanding!

Best of luck!

LESSONS A.S.A.P.

I spent far too long messing around on my own trying to work it out....bad move....go for a couple of beginners lessons, start playing, then book more...go for a set of 6 over 3 months or something....

Lessons all the way. Get the fundamentals right early on and you have a solid foundation for your golfing career. If things go awry after that always go back to check, grip posture and alignment. If you keep working on these three things you will have the basis of a decent swing

BOTH !!!

book a course of 6 lessons and practise as mush as poss between lessons. Also get out on the course, best pratice of all even if its only 9 holes.

It's not an either or situation IMO

Lessons. Its like learning to drive (or pass a test really)

Once you get the basics right, you can practice them over and over again. I prefere to practice out on the course if I can as hitting off grass is better than the matts.

When I first started playing I couldn't hit off the floor as I used every opportunity to play from a tee. I made a point of only using a tee with the driver on the 9 holer at my range, and that was only two of the holes. After a month or so I was taking a reasonable divot and the lessons helped me keep things in check!

Welcome to the forum. Keep us posted with your progress.

As a novice you should go for a lesson, it doesnt have to be with a pro ( though itswould be best) but certainly a seasoned golfer, then practice as much as you can.

Finding the time and cash to fit with a pro's availability doesnt always work, so in the meantime, as you will no doubt want to get at it, I would give you the following advice.......

When you practice go easy, use a 3/4 or 1/2 back swing and dont try to smack the ball into another solar system.
It is better to achieve short accurate shots for future benefit when you do take a lesson.
Concentrate more on short irons than driver and the like, leave that to lessons.
Whatever you do, make sure you feel at ease and comfortable doing it.

I wouldnt advise any more than that until you see a pro or a very good non pro teacher.
