What's happened to westys putting of late.

I haven't been into golf for very long so I don't know what he was like over 2 years ago but last year around the Ryder cup he was putting really well. He's even tried a belly putter if my memory serves me right.

What's happened to him as tee to green he looks solid?

Richy, if I knew I would be selling my services to him at £500 an hour!

Personally, I think his putting has always been suspect albeit streaky. Severe lack of confidence and, I guess, mega frustration as there are few better tee to green.

I think he would pay £5000 pounds an hour if he thought it would work.
At the Open this year, went interviewed you could see his frustration.
He even commentated from tee to green he felt he was the best in the world.
Im sure he has had some great advice and guidance, and has put all that into plenty of practice.
He also has had plenty of low rounds,so i believe he can putt, but his confidence is waining.

Agree fully with snaphookwedge, always has been a dodgy putter, miss's far to many in the 6' to 12' range.
But from tee to green, yes probably the best in the world.

I hope he can turn it around, would love it for him to finally win a major.

Just from casual observation he seems to be terrible at reading putts. Never seen a player who constantly misses putts by as wide as he does and he seems to look confused after almost every missed putt.

You might be right, as his stroke certainly doesn't look too bad.

But then he's got a good caddie ... can't he read them either? :D

I think we all know Luke Donald is pretty good at putting.
Here's a picture of the 2 of them with Lee's Gull wing. Notice how Luke keeps it all much tighter

Luke on the right has his elbow tucked in to his side whereas Lee has a gap as his elbow moves away from his body. This causes the odd push in Lee's putting as the putter head isn't released.

OK, but Lee's shaft is further forward, and Luke's photo appears to be taken from in front of him, as i presume his coach/caddy is standing directly opposite
- both of which would contribute to seeing a "gap"

i have no doubt that Bob is right on this, but it's difficult getting a "teaching" point over when the photos aren't immediately comparable.

While I see what you mean Bob, I still think his main problem is between his ears. Most of his putts are already missed in his mind before he even steps up to them. Sergio is the exact same anytime he steps up to something under 8ft.

Ok, my untrained take on the two strokes.

Luke's looks more like it is the result of a pendulum swing, as his putter head has cleared higher off the ground, whereas Lee has pushed his clubhead through the putt and it has stayed flatter to the ground.

So Luke's putter head path from this view looks like part of a circle, whereas Lee's is like a rugby ball...

At a guess, the resulting different putts would be a smooth roll for Luke, versus a skiddy one for Lee?

Sadly I dont have Lee and Luke available to pose for me so this was the nearest I could find. Apologies.
But just watch Lees follow through when putting and you will see that gap appear

Westwood seems to have a very mechanical stroke. It is almost in two pieces with a long pause and then a push at the ball. Seems to be trying to get the pace all from the follow through. Donalds stroke like a lot of the great putters, seems to be so rhythmical. Perhaps Westwood should get some tips from Ben Crenshaw ? Just my thoughts as a non expert. ;)

That's undoubtedly his problem - he needs some time alongside you :)

i must admit i have tended to agree with the poster above about him always looking confused when his putts missed.

Bob i might be way off the mark here but would i have seen that same left arm with Lee's driving and iron play....

I know that he is one of the best tee to green but is it maybe something that he is so used to doing now that he cant change it as it would impact the other part of his game......

Or am i talking out my backside. :D :D
