Last night I had a session at the local range with a launch monitor (GC2) to determine the gaps between my PW and SW (currently 45 and 55 *). After hitting 5 or so balls with each, I had a good grouping with each club and distances of 110 yards (PW) and 90 yard (SW). It was decided this was probably too much of a gap so a 50* wedge seemed to be the obvious answer to give a distance of 100 yards. How wrong we were!
With the new wedge I was hitting it exactly the same distance as the SW, despite there being 5* difference in loft - probbaly down to graphite v steel shaft. To fill the gap correctly I had to drop to a 48* wedge which gave me 100 exactly.
If I hadn't paid for the session, I would have just picked up a 50* wedge and then realised I had 2 clubs that hit it the same distance! I highly recommend one of these sessions before plumping for the obvious choice as it may not result in what you think it will.
Now I jus need to work on half/three quarter swings to cover the shorter distances.
