Processor Intel Pentium Dual Core
Processor model number T4200
Processor speed 2.00 GHz
Processor bus 800 MHz
Processor cache 1 MB
Memory (RAM) 4 GB

I am a PC engineer, by trade

The RAM and hard Drive are really good for the price

It is let down by the Processor, Try to get a Pentium Core 2 Duo if you can, but you will need to go up in price
Also steer clear of Vista, Go for Windows 7 instead you will be doing yourself a favour.

Lets compare a desktop with a laptop
Open up a desktop and you will see lots of empty space, great for airflow and circulation, they can put in really good processors that make a lot of heat, you can add a case fan too

Now a laptop does not have this ability to process heat, so they have to put lower spec chips in that produce less heat. But they therefore have a performance lag.and your laptop will start to creak and slow up much sooner than a similar price desktop

If you spend £500 on a desktop Pc and £500 on a laptop, The Desktop will win each time

A desktop is cheaper to repair as many parts are generic, you are not limited to the manufacturers own products.

Thus endeth todays lesson

Thanks for all the advice.
Philthefragger, we did look at desktops but we want it to be portable and dont really have room in the house to have a computer desk.
The laptop I am looking at comes with free upgrade to windows 7 so that isnt a problem, as I was made aware of the problems with vista.
All I really wanted to know is if it was a good laptop for the price

Since we're taking spec.

How does this seem?

Zoostorm Desktop PC, Pentium Dual Core E6300 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVDRW, No Operating System. LAN, 2 PCI, 1 PCI-e x1, 1 PCI-e x 16. 6 USB 2.0

Looking to buy this system and transfer the 2 "legacy" cards from my existing unit, install a new copy of XP and install all my existing software (all of which is XP)...

Not heard of Zoostorm, but initial googling seems favourable.

Everyone keeps telling me to buy windows 7 pro and run the software in XP mode.....but that's another £100 on top.

Tempted, I must say. All my garb currently runs on AMD Athlon 2000 (2200?) and 1gb......

Fairly average.....crikey, I must have been in the wilderness for a while.

I thought other than a quad-core, that was pretty special.

I'm still looking t.b.h. but I did fancy running XP on that machine!!
