Our course is normally closed Xmas Day, but they have agreed to open it this year.

I've just had a look on BRS and there are a grand total of 5 bookings. It will be like millionaires golf if the weather is decent.

Since when does a members' golf course need to be "staffed"????

What on earth are people going on about? It's a big piece of grass, just turn up and play.

And what has some random member of staff have to do with insurance?

What you see as a simple situation is likely not to be when business/liability/insurance/duty of care are involved.
I would imagine that a business's insurance has conditions for it to be valid, and one of them is that the insurance company will meet claims etc if the business does or does not do certain things.
It is likely that if the (golf) business permits it to be open to the players then the business has to provide certain staff/facilities etc.
And if those things aren't provided, then the business should be open.
So, if no staff etc, then a responsible business will close their business to protect itself.
You might not agree that that is how it should be, but I think you'll find it is the case , or similar.?

Anyway, screw the naysayers.

Found out today my course is open on the day in question so for anyone interested I'll be putting up a forum comp for anyone interested, just for a bit of fun.

If anyone's local, at a loose end and would like a knock, I'll be asking about guests too.

I'll ask Mrs D ?

So how does that apply when the bar and clubhouse is closed but golfers can play until 1030pm in the middle of summer?

You can bet that the clubs insurance arrangements do "apply".

Each business has its own arrangements with its insurance company, I imagine. Both would understand what summer may involve maybe, but in any event if the insurance doesn't cover Clubs A and B for Xmas day, but Clubs C and D have got insurance for that day( paid more premium, maybe?), that's the way it is.
Don't expect all clubs have the exact same arrangements, except that I don't think any will break their arrangements, whatever they are.

Just noticed we have a start sheet for Xmas day, and quite a few have already put their names down. Assume the pins will be left out this year.

Not for me though as there are lots of other days I can play around Xmas, and would rather be with the family Xmas day.(y)

Spare a thought for us poor blighters in Wales. All golf courses have to close after xmas day until at least 17th January. With the course closed on the wee lads birthday anyway, that means xmas eve is our last playing day for bloomin ages. I spent a lot of time organising our Boxing Day cross country comp. All now binned.

Saw that earlier. That's tough especially over the holidays. Hope for biblical rain and snow so the courses would have been shut anyway

A couple of years ago my father in law was over from christmas. He doesnt play but HID sent both of us out for 9 holes while she got dinner sorted. Met a few of my mates and had a nice couple of hours. My FIL had never been on a course so he enjoyed the walk and the dazzling skills on show. ;)

A full round is a bit much on Christmas for me but I don't see the harm in a quick game.

Fair enough, good explanation, thanks ?.

Seems to me another thread where yet again some clubs are just doing the minimum for their members and finding it far to easy to stop golfers doing things rather than finding ways of facilitating things.

A golf course is a facility. The management have a duty of care towards everyone using the facility. Whether they have paid or not! The reality is the club needs to take all reasonable measures (as mentioned earlier). Everyone is frightened of litigation today, or invalidating their insurance. It's easier to close rather than trust people to be sensible. Sad but true.

A real shocker that Wales seems to have very high case numbers again. Is this the result of people going crazy after the recent circuit break?

Back on topic, I have never played golf on Xmas day. Play every New Year's day in a comp but comps are binned at the moment I'm sorry to say.

I’ve played golf on Christmas Day loads of times when we were in South Africa.

Get up early and play 18.
In for presents and some breakfast.
Hit the pool for a few hours then braai for Christmas lunch and maybe a few holes in the evening.

Awesome day.

Here there’s too much of the “spend time with family” rubbish.

If you’re not spending time with them during the year then they aren’t worth the time and effort for that 1 day.

I played on Xmas morning about 20 years ago at Hainault, course was closed so no pins, just played to test my Xmas present, a brand new Scotty, needless to say unmown soggy greens in freezing temps was not a great first outing, in fact it may have been its only outing I’m pretty sure it got swapped for the original 2 ball shortly after
