Since when does a members' golf course need to be "staffed"????

What on earth are people going on about? It's a big piece of grass, just turn up and play.

And what has some random member of staff have to do with insurance?

Maybe never having run a business maybe you do not understand the legal implications these days. Neither do I but that is the argument about closing put forward by the Club Manager mainly as it is his head in the noose if something goes wrong.

It's a bit like playing on a course close during covid if the club has announced that it is closed then there is no legal liability if people ignore it and play anyway.

Every club and every course has it own set of quirks, rules and traditions. What applies at one person's club does not apply at another person's club and neither is right nor wrong. This is the way of things and it's just fine. I find it amusing that so many threads on this forum end up in a tat for tat discussion between people seemingly unable to see that what is done at their club is not what is done at others - I'm guilty of it too! How boring life would be if everything was the same.

Anyway I can play on Christmas Day because my clubs and courses allow it (some covid restrictions are obviously in place this year) but I don't because I like a quiet Christmas Day with the wife and daughter eating ourselves stupid, playing games, watching films and perhaps a little stroll if the weather's good for it.

Would I like to play on Christmas Day? Sure, if my family had such a tradition or I were single in want of company but I don't and I'm not.

I cant say i have ever even considered it - i'd much rather get stuck into the drinking watching the kids opening the presents and start the all-day cooking fest! The thought of buggering off for 4 hours (min) while everyone else fends for themselves would deflate the whole atmosphere in our house, and one that i have so many precious memories from the kids growing up!

Assuming that the course is not staffed on Xmas day, how are clubs dealing with covid monitoring, contact tracing etc this year. Assuming that they are not letting everyone just turn up for a free for all.

Fair point, I had always assumed that Xmas day golf was more informal and people just turned up without booking. Guessing the club may still may have some obligation to monitor the behavior of those using the facilities so far as covid is concerned.

Our on-line booking system won't allow bookings for Christmas day.
You just turn up and play (pre COVID obviously)

side issue but the HGK also said since unusually the course wouldn’t be open on 25th he’s going to take the opportunity to have the sprinklers on for a large portion of the day. it'll certainty mess with the plans for those hoping to 'sneak' on

Right...
I'm going to post a Christmas Day golf competition thread just for a bit of fun and involvement for those who don't do the traditional thing.

Just need to check my course isn't closed first ???

remember to check the slope on the greens with the flag

As per post #60 - Because of Covid, we have to book using BRS. But... we also have to "report in" on arrival and before teeing off - because an online booking isnt a record of who is/isnt on site. So it wouldn't work on Christmas Day unless we had someone on site to do the recording of attendance.

i am sure a lawyer somewhere will still try it on. if there's blame there's a claim
I'm not a lawyer so I don't know the correct wording but I think the idea is to show you have taken 'reasonable steps'. As always in the law the definition of what is reasonable is open to interpretation hence the proliferation of parasites, or claims lawyers as they prefer to be known. It's a sad state that our actions now are so influenced by the impact of these people.

Me and my Mrs played 9 holes last Christmas day and will this year it the weather is OK. The course is post your green fee in a box, so no problems.

Update from club.
Clubhouse closed on 25th and 26th Dec and 1st Jan.
Course open on all days at your own risk but please play in, 2, 3, 4 balls to ensure your safety.

Well there is a change

Just had a notice that they have decided to Open the course on New Years day next year and keep the locker rooms open

Maybe it is the simple reason that as we are still in tier 2 they should not be any New Years Eve parties and the pubs will be closed.

I asked our pro if he had ever worked on Christmas Day and he said he had, just once. He had one customer in five hours and they returned a pressie so he ended up with a negative balance book for his efforts!

I'd play a quick 9 if I could! No kids around yet! Course is closed though so its out of my hands!
