Is golf the loneliest sport there is.

Played today and shot 33 points in me first 18 hole comp, tees were as far back as God can put them and it was tough, and I mean SAS tough. My 33 points could of been 40 or 30, winning it was 34 points when I left, but half way through I looked at a PP and he was in a bad place. A real bad place. His driving, irons and all his game was dire. And he plays off 15. I did not know what to say to him without patronising him. Or more importantly when to say it.
On the 15th I sank a par putt which was straight outta amen corner history. It was the best putt of my life. He was chuffed for me, but still he was on his knees.
On the 16th he hit a dire drive again and stood over his ball for his second, 237 yd to the back pin with the wind in his face, up hill. He hit a screamer with his three wood. We got to the green eventually and his ball was 3 ft from the pin. Straight and uphill. That putt could of been 30 ft by the time he had hit it and it had dropped.
Bloody hell I was as chuffed as he was. We took the P out of another PP coz he was the only one sat on the birdie settee up til then.
When it had gone quiet. I walked up to him, put me arm around him and said" Baghead, I know we play in a four ball, but don't you think golf is a lonely sport at times". " ****ing lonely" he says, "****ing lonely, if I could kick **** outta meself I would, ****ing games killing me".
We had a laugh, and how we laughed. Normal service was resumed at the last two holes and he was dire. But.
Have you ever thought that the game you love, gets you out with your pals, takes you to some of the most beautiful places in the world, gives you some of the greatest sporting memories ever, is the loneliest sport in the world.
Thoughts please.

We've all been there, I love playing golf and can't remember ever wishing I was somewhere else, but sometimes you walk round the course with good company and you may as well be the only person on the planet. The great thing about golf though is you know that everyone else has been where you are at that time and when you're ready to laugh with them, you will laugh.

Yep. Was there not so long ago and was grim. Really awful and I walked in after 11. Simply wasn't enjoying it and was in danger if ruining it for my PP's. Couldn't see any point in staying out and enduring another two hours. Got home, took the wife to a nice pub for a lunchtime drink and forgot all about it.

when i play with my mates we dont let anyone get in a lonely place as we take the urine at every opportunity if they ,or me are having a mare..
you soon work hard to not be the butt end of the banter for the rest of the round ,cruel b`stards my lot.

No, round the world solo yachting is probably lonlier.
Imagine having a bad day whilst trying to navigate the southern oceans ............... now that would be lonely.

I see where you're coming from - when I'm having a shocking round I do tend to get angry and kind of retreat into myself. But 90% of the time I do have a good laugh with my fellow golfers. Especially in the friendly rounds with my mates, we give each other a good bit of stick and banter along the way.

If I'm having a bad day I pretty much forget the round and focus on having a laugh with my PP's.

Unless you are Billy No-mates and always play by yourself, I don't think so! I always seem to enjoy a good chinwag and a bit of banter when I play. Having said that it is normally an individual sport where all your mistakes are purely down to yourself, with no team mates to blame.

Quite the opposite. Not many sports you can have a proper chinwag with your mates for 4 hours and go for a couple of pints immediately afterwards.
Golf is a hugely social sport if you ask me
