Just been perusing a thread on another golfer's forum where there were (as usual) differences of opinion as to whether it's best to tee up or not when teeing off with an iron. Got me to thinking I might give it a go to see what, if any, difference it makes to my iron tee shots. What does the panel think ... worth trying or not?

I figure it gives you some advantage to get the ball a bit above the ground (not too far), more chance of a clean strike, so you'd be a fool not to when given the opportunity.

Theres a thread running currently, on here, in the experts section:

http://forums.golf-monthly.co.uk/showthread.php?62797-Tee-or-no-Tee-on-a-Par-3

That is based on Par 3's mind you.

if we're talking par 4/5's then yes. When I hit my 3 iron off the tee into one of our par 4's I'll tee it up.

For the same reasons described in the above thread

I remember reading years ago about someone asking Jack Nicklaus why he always teed up when using irons. His reply went something like 'in my experience, air gives less resistance than grass'!

When I was learning to play golf in Glasgow in the 70's I was taught to always use a tee peg when teeing off - therefore this is the way that everybody else should do it

Not really scientific, but was watching a few Mark Crossfield course videos and they quite often bash the ground with their club to make a lift in the ground and tee the ball on that... pretty sure with irons, but definitely saw it with a 3 wood... think he mentioned something about lower launch if you do it that way...

To date, I've always achieved a perfect lie by placing the ball on the teeing ground when using an iron.

Why mix it up with how you play from the fairway. Long iron from the deck? - no problem.

For shorter irons, 8i down I don't use a tee. This is because I prefer the feeling of hitting down on the ball. 7i Upwards I will use a low tee.

My friend "picks" the ball when he strikes it, virtually no divots and he always tees the ball up when he gets a chance. He's a better golfer than me right enough.

Whatever works for you is best

Are you saying that you change your swing just because of using a low tee?

My swing changes ever time I swing :-) Who knows what going to happen.

I don't change it deliberately, but I do tend to hit down on the ball more with more lofted clubs. It just personal preference with regards to using a Tee.
