Increased distance - Golf Balls vs Club Technology?

Sorry to hark back to the OP, but I'm struggling to understand why it's a bad thing that golf now favours the bigger and stronger players. (I'm also going to add "Fitter" to that list.) Why shouldn't the more athletic players have an advantage? If someone puts the work in at the Gym, then they deserve to play better IMO.

Then again, I have just got back from the Gym where I'm trying to get back to my fitness level from a few years ago..:D

I can't see many of our seniors wanting to work out for several hours a day. It would interfere with their drinking habits!

You seem to be very fond of the status quo chrisd! :)

Seems more like acceptance that things evolve - progress.

Your posts in this thread indicate that you want the game to actually go backwards - regress!

Yes, but in the old days......

Old time club specs were typically....

And in reply to those posts.... Rubbish! and So What! resp.

Have you considered creating a Poll for this issue? I'm pretty certain I know what the result would be!

One of the conclusions is that golf now favours bigger and stronger people, as they can get the best out of the modern technology.

Hasn't it always been that way, to an extent?
Arnie wasn't small, Jack was certainly a big lad & Player was the fittest in his day. They were the best around for some time.

Also, in every era you've had exceptions to this bigger is better theory - Zach Johnson & Luke Donald spring to mind in this current batch of players.

There are many ways to get the ball into the hole, you don't have to go for par 5's two, for example. A pitch and putt seems to work well for Zach (at the Masters for example), and seemed to for Luke when he was at his best.

Can we get Del's next Mondays rule/equipment change campaign out of the way now so I can enjoy next week in peace?

He wants to stop the use of fat grips on putters

And that's where the handicapping system comes in. But in scratch golf then bigger, faster, stronger and fitter should be (but isn't always) a benefit. ;)

Indeed! :D

Too fast for him!

You need to put a limit on it! Though P/S-er seems to think 'calming' bight be the solution!

Just think he should practice what preaches tbh mate. He's more than happy to give Markgs & delc stick but throws the teddy out when he received some back.

beginning to think this thread is a little pointless. Golf needs to move forward, not backward. Advancements in technology, materials and construction mean Golf is finally going places, despite some thinking it shouldn't. Let the game of Golf grow, and if it involves players being able to hit it 300 yards off the tee, then so be it. The amateur game is more like the ladies professional game anyway. The behemoths of the mens professional game have worked harder and harder to get where they are...so leave them to it.

The game of golf seems to be contracting if anything, at least in the UK! Many golf clubs have gone under in the last two or three year, and many more are under threat. A lot of married men I know would like to play, but with 5 hour rounds becoming almost the norm, and expensive hi-tech golf clubs (the sort you hit the ball with) also becoming the norm, they just can't spare the time and the money! :(

It was a light hearted attempt at humour which I thought he might have got :D

well yes and they work long hours because the working time directive is not enforced, the cost of living has gone up so brown nosing around the boss to keep ones job is required as is stabbing ones colleagues in the back etc... Yeah it's a great life for a forty something with kids, time for golf, no not really especially when the missus has to work as well and then there is child care. Does the family exist? Well the weekend is the only plausible time unless there is some brown nosing or back stabbing to be done.
The solution would be to shake the membership regime up, make all the retired golfers 5 day members, no weekend golf not even for a green fee, and thus free up the family men to get out for a quick 18 holes ... But that is radical!!

Don't get this constant referral to the expense? Even 6 month old exotic drivers can be had at less than half price, wait a year or more and they literally give them away. Same with irons, some of the sale prices are stupid low, add in Ebay and the for sale section on here and golf equipment can be bought very cheaply.
In addition, I don't know a single person that has given up due to golf rounds taking longer.

I think you just make this stuff up.
