I had a six year break, 1982 to 1988, when the kids were little, didn't play at all. I was off 8 when I stopped. When I came back I put three cards in & they gave me a 12 handicap. Since then I've never got below 10. Well, this year I've made a great effort and have done a lot of self analysis with the help of Jim Hardy's "Plane Truth". I have, due to short legs & long arms, a flat, Matt Kucharesque, swing. I'm now swinging it like Miguel Angel and the results are surprising. Yesterday I shot my third successive competition round below CSS and got reduced to 9.2. I missed only two fairways, one by a foot, holed practically nothing and shot a net 68 against a CSS of 70.
Miguel is renowned for being straight and there's something, don't know what, about swinging like this which gets the ball going direct to the target, arrow straight without a hint of hook or slice. Not so good on the short game which, frankly, wasn't too good but this needs practice.
To sign off, here's a picture of my favourite athlete which I took at Muirfield last year.
