After playing in an interclub match today, as mentioned in another thread, i was told by the captain, dont be upset if you dont play in the return game at our club, it takes time to learn to play match play. Does it really, I won 6&5 in the first round of our knockout.
We lost the match 5-0, I lost 3&2, one lost 6&4 another 7&6, the captain herself was 2 down, dont know how the 5th did, so I certainly didnt have the worse result. It seems at our club there are plenty wanting to play in home matches, but few want to travel, I played in a team of 4 at Saddleworth cos no one wanted to be up early and drive across Manchester.
The girl I played against said I will probably see you in the return match, she was surprised when I said it was unlikely.

At my club, everyone wants to play the away matches, especially the seniors.

The fact the courses they play include Wentworth, Liphook, Ferndown, Bearwood Lakes, Broadstone, West Surrey, Burhill, Hindhead, West Hill, Hankley Common, Hayling Island, Camberley Heath and North Hants might have something to do with it. They only have to pay for their lunch as well. Almost worth getting old for.:mmm:

Some away courses nobody wants to play, others EVERYONE wants to play. Hard to keep everyone happy but I think the team stalwarts who turn out whatever should get rewarded.

BUT, if I was picking the team I'd always pick the players most likely to win regardless, even if that meant always picking the same people.

richart's eperiences are more common

either way it's normal for the captain to include those that play the unfavoured (home or away) matches in their selections for the favoured ones...

co-incidentially I am currently whittling down a list right now.

At my local club if you lose ur match you get dropped so if you win you stay sounds tough but makes the team really competitive and nearly alway do well in league matches etc

It depends on the type of Match..
If it's a proper competitive one then the best players need to be picked.
If it's more a Social thing then winning comes further down the list so others can get picked.

At my previous club it was always the same names getting picked for any Match, competitive or otherwise - one reason I don't play them anymore....that and the fact I can't generally play weekends..

True, we have friendly matches and scratch team. Friendly matches can and should be shared out but always best and form players for scratch team.

It is some sort of league and I dont have a problem with picking the best players, but I do think the best should be prepared to play both home and away.

We have a fixture list of friendly matches and everyone puts their name down for the ones they are interested in. We tend to struggle for home games because unsurprisingly everyone wants to go to decent courses and play for the cost of lunch. In the end the club were forced to give priority to those that had played the home games in order to get enough players to make up a team for the home leg.

As for the competitive games, they tend to get dealt out within a very selct clique and you can be in a run of decent form (as I've been enjoying) and never get a sniff of making the side. It's done on face fitting and not form and to be honest I just don't bother getting excited about them anymore.

I too would be miffed - I think that it's a state of mind - if you are competitive it takes about half a second to learn that in matchplay you are trying to beat your opponent and you have to do it one hole at a time (my eight year old understands this, but sometimes cries when he doesn't win but that's another story).

I do agree with those who say the away fixtures are more fun as you can play your own track whenever you want to anyway, so hopefully you will get picked again soon

If it's a league then I think the captain/committee need to decide whether they ate after the glory of winning and if so best team available plays but if it's the taking part it friendly matches then I have always believed the same team should play home and away where possible and also against the same pairing of opposition again if possible, the 2 clubs I have played 'B' team friendly matches for this worked well and made for good social Craic after too.
Once you get competitive league matches it's a different mind set and I found there usually players not even staying for after match meal.

The team should be picked from all the players who are committed and are willing to play all matches imo. Then it should go off ability for the people next in line etc.

its just one of those things.

I played in the Moray league on Sunday we were unbeated, but i don't expect to play in the next round as we try and give evryone a game who puts their name down.

The other teams tend to pick the best team on the day but we don't. its good that every one gets a game if they want to play.

if they are short i'll help out and play.

you can't please everyone.

Now the scratch team is a diff matter

Our club also has friendly match's Home and away people always seem to want to play away but never at home. So the Organiser will only pick people who have no demands and will fit in anywhere. I also run our scratch team (none playing) and will always pick the best players available.

I helped our scratch team out by playing in an away match last year because they didn't have enough of the regular team that could (allegedly) make it. It was the poorest course of those in our division imo.

I was offered a place in the team for every match after that regardless of how many of the regular players were available, which I thought was really nice.
The captain even dropped out of the team for one match that I played in.

That's the way it should be, regardless of how many superstars you have.

I would be a bit miffed too if people that plain didn't want to play in certain matches got in ahead of me in the 'nicer' matches to play in, and would think twice about helping out again if that were the case.

if you take the time, effort and expense to play the away matches you should get automatic consideration for the home games, depending how you are playing of course
