Changed course ratings....

We were re-rated about 18 months ago...

Par 70 except for the ladies playing off the yellows.

Mens White rating went from 68.7/124 to 69/120
Mens Yellow went from 67.3/119 to 67.7/118
Ladies Red rating went from 69.9/121 to 70/117

We also have new rating for the Ladies off the Yellows (72.7/123 - par 72) and the Men off the Reds (64.5/115).
The Bogey Rating would have been useful. Saves having to do the back calculation 😉

Where is that? Lovely. 👌
Darkest deepest Suffolk. We are actually quite blessed being well in the country away from any serious urbanisation and get an abundance of wildlife around the course. Not seen the Otter yet this year (seems to be semi-residential in one of our ponds) and we were just saying during the round yesterday that there have been no Grass Snakes seen in a while.

It's funny how all the courses that get re-rated seem to go down. Haven't heard of any getting higher ratings.
Errr...all of our CR's actually went UP....but as the difference between the Course and Bogey ratings narrows, the Slope will inevitably reduce.

Folks need to stop thinking about Slope as an indication of difficulty. It is merely a calculated number based on the Course and Bogey ratings.

If a course has a CR of 70, which on rerating increases to a 72, and a Bogey rating of 92, which increases to a 93, then the slope will reduce (from 118 to 113*), even though the course has been rated harder for both scratch and bogey golfers.

*for male golfers

A couple of courses we re-rated in the last couple of years (being a county with relatively few golf courses, we only do 3-4 per year to complete the 10-year cycle; and actually only did 2 last year)

Course1 (White- Men): 67.5/116 → 68.4/120
Course1 (Yellow- Men): 65.6/113 → 66.4/118

Course2 (White- Men): 71.3/117 → 71.2/123
Course2 (Yellow - Men): 70.0/116 → 70.0/123

What do you mean? The slope ratings went down several points as I said. The course rating changes were negligible.
As per#32, Slope is a function of the Course Rating.
  • Slope = multiplying factor x (Bogey Rating - Course Rating)
If both Course and Bogey Ratings increase but the Bogey Rating increases by less than the Course Rating, Slope will go down.

But your CRs only went up 0.3 or so. Hardly makes any difference surely.
An increase in CR of 0.3, with all other things remaining the same, will see slope reduce by 2. In our case the Bogey ratings either went up less than the CR or they themselves dropped very slightly, causing the slight reductions in Slope.

If the CR goes up 0.5 and the Bogey Rating goes down 0.5 then slope will reduce by 5 (5.381 to be precise...but 5 when rounded)

It only takes relatively subtle changes to CR and BR for there to be a seemingly big change in Slope....and folk are wrongly fixated on Slope.

Course Raters do not assess a course for the slope rating. Slope is something that is derived from the CR and BR's that are assessed.

Where I played for a few years was rated upwards just after I left. Many indexes have reduced. The interclub team had gone 4 consecutive promotions ('caps travelled well), definitely being relegated this year though.
