When I was on holiday in Ireland last year my old man and I had to show the pro handicap certificates before we were allowed to play. This doesn't seem to be the case here though.

If they were new members then surely the proposer/seconder should ensure that the individual is capable of playing to an acceptable standard and has a basic understanding of the rules and etiquette?

Instead of waiting for them to hole out on the second, I would have walked to the third tee and jumped in front. Not really done, but I would have done it. A quick 'mind if I scoot through' and off we go.

A while back there was a thread suggesting that people are advised about maintaining the pace of play before they tee off. I think based on a post by Bobmac about tips on how to speed up play.

Why not when the fee is paid just get people to read through say 10 bullet points on etiquette and pace of play before they go out. Many occasional or new golfers probably don't really understand these these things but aren't necessarily bad people and many would do the right thing if they knew what it was.

Agree to an extent that's why I said education is key to this. I do feel though that a playability test - golf card really is the way forward. Regional PGA's could instigate and rthis easily enough through a variety of road shows and education nights run at various venues.

I suggested in our place to have a meet n greet 9 hole comp for new & new to competition members , followed by a bit of finger food in the bar afterwards .. ask current members to play with each group & if the newbies have any questions then & there or in the clubhouse after was the time to iron things out .. it does a couple of things

It makes them aware of the do's & dont's & whats acceptable r not ,
It takes the AWE off playing with established members or low handicap golfers
It explains the online booking & competitions etc .
It makes people feel at ease & welcome .. being new anywhere aint easy , at the time i was told thats a great idea , never heard another word , personaly if i meet someone who is new or not sure around the place i offer to play a few holes with them some evening..if we do play the 1st thing in say to them is "i wont tell you how or what to play but if you have any questions just ask, even if it sounds obvious or silly , the only way to know is ask" ..
Treat others as you would want to be treated as a newbie

When I took up golf, playing with more experienced Mr Mimms, I was the opposite.
I was so nervous, that anytime anyone was remotely in view behind us I would suggest that we let them play through.
Husband said this was a good idea up to a point but we did need to get in before it got dark!

Does your course not offer you an opportunity to just sneak across from, say, the first green to maybe the 4th tee? If they weren't going to let you through I'd have just slipped by. Chances are they wouldnt have even noticed

I applaud your patience and resisting the temptation of bombing one over their heads... but two wrongs don't make a right!

I think i would have skipped a hole or two and reported them to Pro shop and secretary when back at the club house. The course and club is there for the enjoyment of all and they do not have the right to impede your right to enjoy the course. I do think that clubs should issue a booklet on course etiquette when new members join.

On the basis of this, they must have taken 8+ hours to get a full 18 in... I'm not quite sure I'm ready for the 8 hour round any time, anywhere except perhaps Augusta where I would take it on one of my chins...
