I do not understand the meaning of this.

I respond to comments directed to me as courteously, forthrightly and honestly as I can.

I do not begrudge other players winning prizes. Nor do moan about other players winning prizes.
I can see no evidence in my recent posts where I have stated this. And it appears you can not find any evidence ether.

I did express some disappointment about playing quite well and finishing 13th in a two-ball scramble.
Initial post was fairly innocuous.
Others found fault that was simply not there and misconstrued. Made mountains out of molehills.

Once I've paid an entrance fee, I take the game seriously.
And in this case I felt the need to do my best for my partner. I'm sure he felt the same.
The only "fun" would be to pick up a prize for our good play.
I am not bitter about not "winning" a prize, merely somewhat deflated.

The game itself was thrilling as we built and maintained a good score. We enjoyed doing that. But it was not fun. It was seriously applying ourselves to the task.

I was not going to respond anymore but I presume the others found fault is aimed at me.

I think most people would of put something along the lines of had a great day playing a fun game and both my partner and I played well, however finished outside the prizes so others must have also played well.

Greenkeepers Revenge two-player scramble yesterday.
I like this format. I find 4-player scrambles rather tedious in comparison.

Me 4.2 and partner 13.3.
35% lower and 15% higher gave us PH of 4.
We were 1-under gross. Negotiated all 6 holes with obstacles successfully. Made one bogey and two birdies.
Absolutely solid game by us for 41 points.
13th place out of 60 pairs.
6 shots behind the winners.
Why do we bother?

6 shots separating 13 teams means the handicaps were fairly accurate and worked well. If the winners were 6 points ahead of 2nd I might agree with you.

Deliberate poor shots ?! What ?

I have been criticised, or so it seems, for taking the "fun" format seriously.
I take each shot seriously.
I embrace the challenge of greenkeepers revenge. It was interesting/amusing/entertaining to face the challenges.
I am failing to understand where I am gong wrong, in the opinions of some, in how I play such a format.

How can I play in such way that will avoid taking each shot seriously? Nonsense.

I can understand a professional taking every single shot and game seriously , it’s their job and then need it to pay the bills

Any club amateur will of course try their best whenever they play

But not having any sort of fun in any event unless they win a prize will prob seem a bit strange to some

Once you realise that that’s not what the word means and the rest of the world does not use it in that way then the disagreement, and confusion, you have caused everyone else will make more sense.

Many people do activities for “fun” where they expend huge concentration, effort, skill and care. From golf to snooker, needlework, painting or playing a musical instrument or a million other things. Indeed, that level of focus is part of the fun for many. Stop thinking that the two things are opposite. They are not.

Turned up today and was getting ready in the car park with the boy. He's been trying to get his handicap down so we're putting general play cards in every time he plays. He's a bit all over the place but we get it round eventually.

A couple of visitors from the far east were readying themselves and we exchanged pleasantries and make our way to the practice nest by the first tee. The visitors are milling around waiting on the 8 man comp setting off in front of them , and I direct them to the correct tees etc. They tee off and away they go. We're right behind them but wait until they're on the first green. We can tell it's going to be slow due to the comp, so there's no point in rushing. We start and the boy is playing quite well for once .

We get to the fifth green and there's the visitors in front and the last 2 ball from the comp on the 6th tee. The comp guys tee off and leave the visitors on the tee. We finish on the 5th and walk over to the tee. One of the visitors then asks if we want to join them. I felt a bit awkward as my boy isn't that great and don't really want people searching for balls and ruining their game etc. but I asked him if it was ok and he said yes. Knowing the type of guy he is I doubt if he'd have said no.

Turns out the two guys were South Korean. One of them was the father of a Celtic player and the other guy was the players agent. They were over negotiating stuff. Didn't explore that further. The conversation wasn't exactly flowing as my Korean ain't up to much, and only one of them really only spoke English. But what I thought was going to be torture for 3 hours actually turned out to be one of the most fun rounds of golf I've ever had. What they lacked in English they more than made up for in charisma, and we had a great laugh

It's funny how things turn out.

I play golf for the joy of playing.
When I look back on the half dozen or so best games I ever played - none of them were fun at the time and duration of doing them.
They involved skill and composure and concentration.
But they brought me great joy, when they were over, to have done them. A sense of achievement and pleasure in having so achieved.

There are fun things that I find to do and enjoy. But this is a golf-forum and there are other places to discuss those.
Playing golf does not compare with the things that I find to be fun.

If winning prizes were the only way for me to derive pleasure from playing golf, I would have stopped playing many decades ago.
"Fun" in the sense of how I understand the word, is not something I am seeking on a golf course.

Very often something amusing might occur while I am playing or I might have thoroughly enjoyed a particular game.
I particularly enjoyed a game I lost 5&4 this year. Watching at close quarters how a +1.5 player goes about business. I played fairly well, for me. Scratch matchplay.
None of this is "fun" in my mind.

"Fun" for me is linked to "just for fun" and "fun and games". That is not the way I approach golf.
Golf has been a huge part of my life for a very long time. I might have died from fun-overload, if I played with a fun-seeking approach all those years.
