Handicap protection at it's finest!

What happened to them on the back 9? Just fell off and struggled to score?
He plays off 27. Had a couple of birdies on front 9, one for 5 points. Hits the ball very well, drives close to 300 yards in these dry conditions. +5 gross on front 9.

Back 9, horrendous course management decisions. On 10th he hits a 5 wood off tee, even though I'm hitting 4 iron to lay up short of water. Pushes it right, far too long in trees. Chips out sideways, terribly, as he hits it too long and it goes in water. Walks off with a triple and a point.

Poor drive on 11th, but he has 2 shots and it is a par 5. A scratch golfer would just play the easy 100 yard pitch down the huge fairway, then continue the hole. A bogey would still get him 3 points. But, he tries to hit a 3 wood between a gap of about 2 feet between 2 trees, 40 yards away (also having to hit it extremely low). Launches it straight into the trees. Lucky to get an 8 in the end.

13th, he had a 25 foot downhill shot from the fringe. Was his 4th shot, but he gets 2 shots on this par 4. Was an easy 2 putt. Inexplicably, he tries to chip it, blades it over the green and into the pond. Blob.

16th Par 4, he drove it about 4 yards short of green. His pitch over bunker was bladed, went over back. He tried a soft chip back, fluffed it 1 foot forwards, then it rolled back down the hill behind him. Walks off with a double.

Last hole, par 3, he sliced his drive out of bounds, so walked off with a triple for zero points.

He is an iGolf member. Last night was his 10th round for handicap. He is miles better than 27. If his course management was mediocre, then I reckon he would easily have had another 5 or 6 points on the back 9. Better chipping, a few more again.

Played Westerhope yesterday, really enjoyed it.

The wide open fairways suit my game much more than my own course which is very tight and punishes anything slightly wayward. Pity it's on the wrong side of Newcastle.

One bizarre aspect - the only bunker I landed in seemed to be full of dried mud rather than sand. It wasn't GUR and the rest of the bunkers on the course looked absolutely fine.

Played Close House Colt course yesterday evening and it kicked my ass. Just one of those nights, I hit the ball well but got a few funky bounces and lies and when I did miss I only missed by 4 or 5 yards but inevitably I missed on the wrong side and got punished. Greens confused me as usual, I really struggle with the pace of those greens. I managed to de-green a putt on the 2nd, hit it slightly too hard coming out of the fringe, it caught the slope 3 foot behind the hole and proceeded to roll at a pace of what felt like 2cm per second all the way off the front of the green and leave me a 30 footer coming back up the slope. At least with aimpoint I managed to read all the breaks correctly as there is no way I could see the level of slope with my eyes. Had a few putts that looked straight but aimpoint was telling me they were breaking 3 or even 4 fingers.

Also, I wonder if there is a more expensive member guest rate in the country. £60 for a member guest, up from £50 last year. Think I'll play the Filly the next time I get invited.

Played Hunstanton today and Royal West Norfolk yesterday with a Michelin star meal in between - fantastic trip, albeit journey back down to Surrey was painful on a Friday afternoon!

Hunstanton is a better course, in my honest opinion, despite being ranked a fair bit lower than RWN.

Thought RWN was similar feel to Rye, whereas Hunstanton as more Burnham&Berrow/championship setup. Had a few souvenir birdies over the trip, and an eagle!

Didn’t know there was a Michelin star restaurant near there…..that would be good to know!

Played in a charity comp today. Best three scores of the four, with all scores counting on Par 3's.

We scored 129 and came 5th

I had a cracking round and one more game tomorrow (4 this week) and I am aching already.

Did you play Brancaster early in the morning with the tide in ? A whole different feel to the course with some holes dramatically changed

Had no mates today so I joined the 8 o'clock roll-up for the first time. Got drawn with two fellers I didn't know, but they were both good company and had a really enjoyable round with them.

Started on the 10th, and doubled 11 & 12 so it was a slow start, but I played really well from that point forwards. Finished the first nine with 17 points, despite not setting the world alight with putter once again. Kicked on again on the second nine - did well on par 3s weirdly, I parred all of the first five but finally succumbed to a bogey on the sixth and final one.

With three holes left I had 29 points, long par 4 and two 5s to come, I just hoped to par one of the 5s to get me to 36 points. However, I ended up birdying the 7th with a ridiculous 65-yard chip in (from well below the green so I didn't even know it had gone in until we walked up and couldn't see it anywhere), then managed to par both par 5s for a final score of 77 and 39 points.

Tied two other guys but came third on countback, which is stupid when I played the back nine first and I actually had 22 points on my back nine, but this is what golf has decided we use for some reason. 😂 Won 9 quid from my 3 quid entry so a cool profit of 6. And card has gone in, so I think it's quite likely I'll now be down to my lowest ever handicap. 👍🏻

I've definitely turned a corner in the last couple of months, gone from not breaking 80 at all at my place last year to now either threatening or doing it every week. Happy golfer at the moment. Wonder how long it will last. 😂

A game of two halves today. One of the downsides of a proprietary club is that they look towards green fees ahead of protecting members. Today was the worst case scenario of this. 4 visitors, occasional golfers had a slot at 8.20. We were in the 8.28 slot, they booked in 2 days ago, no space for us to move. First hole they carved 2 oob off the tee, reloaded, just about stayed in. This continued throughout the round. They held us up on every hole, had no interest in letting us through, hacked around , balls frequently lost, clubs thrown (before anyone asks, no we didn't ask to play through as they looked a bit grizzly and we are all wimps 😄)

I allowed their behaviour to wind me up and I just couldn't concentrate front 9. I scrambled to 12 points, couldn't get my timing right at any stage.

Back 9 I had a reset, found inner calm. Birdied the 10th, parred the 11th. Slowed the swing, got the timing back. Had one bad hole, the rest was solid. Pushed one putt but made a number of 3-4 ft putts, the type that are dead straight but easy to miss on a bad day.

Finished with 20 points on the back 9, much better and the right way round to prevent afternoon grumpiness 😄. No golf for me for 2 weeks now so making a par on the last with 4 good shots is the right memory to have.

Played the first round of the club championships today, blue tees at 6,697 yards is a lot for an old timer but I had one of my best rounds of the year and scored 81 gross, net 68 off 95%.
Puts me in 13th in the gross and third in the net and should get my handicap heading back in the right direction after a few months of dross.

Clubs today were as per those I used at Great Barr on Thursday except for the irons which I switched out for a newer set, 1971 Slazenger Jack Nicklaus $1m, which celebrated his first million dollars in prize money.

Played in our annual Charity Day today.
Played okay, but our team didn't do too well overall.
Won a sleeve of balls by getting nearer to the pin than our pro on our 15th.
Won a bottle of wine for nearest the pin on our 10th, finished 3" away, closest I've ever been to a hole in one!
In fact, I played our six par 3s in one over and, despite three blobs, finished with 38pts.
Happy days, although it's not allowed for h'cap purposes, which is a shame.

Well played @Crow, still amazes me how well you play with older clubs.
