I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Uttoxeter today. Only 2nd time I’ve played it again a huge mixed bag couldn’t string 3 good shots in a row together.

Swing was all over the place and needs a lot of work to find consistency. Scabbed it round the first 4 holes, then at the short Par 5 5th hole was on the green with Driver and wedge for a nice easy birdie, then scabbed it round again 6-8th. The round carried on like that all the way round, some absolute bombed drives followed by a woeful approach. Managed to birdie the 16th then slapped it again up 17 & 18. Finished 2 over my HI but that was more luck than scrambling it was terrible.

Worst part was 9th hole see random irritations
On my hit list as not got a U in my courses yet 😂.
Are you on tour ,being at The Chase yesterday?

No mate I take full advantage of my job, so any chance I get to finish around lunch time to slope off and do my own thing I take full advantage 😂

It’s not a bad little course, it takes a lot more course management to play than the ability to hit bombs, the only real chance to open the shoulder with driver imo are 5, 8,9, 10, 15, but even then I’d say only 8, 9 & 15 are holes that require driver the others can still plot round with a 3 wood or long iron. The rest of holes even the Par 5 13th you don’t need more than a 5wood/long iron for position. As there are several blind tee shots and some nice little dog legs. Even the shorter holes have well placed little hazards. The only real criticism is the bunkers are pretty average. But it’s a fun course to plot your way round and for £18 it’s a good little course.

Nice one, sounds like you're not a million miles away from where I play at Shifnal 😉 Doing greens maintenance this week but if you fancy a knock later on be happy to sign you in 👍

Played yesterday evening and a rare round for me of not putting a card in. We played a friendly doubles match instead as 2 of the others didn't want to play in the comp and we had a visitor with us.

Was playing steady, was +3 on the 13th tee and then my driver decided to not co-operate. Hit a 70 yard block on 13 to never be seen again. Did the exact same thing on 14 and to round the night off I did it again on 18. No idea where it came from but it bloody better go back to there quickly. Lost 3 balls, haven't done that in ages, was a complete shock to the system.

The visitor was so impressed with the course he said walking off 18 "How do I go about getting a refund?"

@Springveldt what was his problem with it? Too fiery at the moment?
Not at all. Just looks very shabby, fairways with lots of cracks in them (they put slits in the fairways to allow water penetration), patchy grass on fairways and tee boxes. They also tined the greens last week, to be fair they have done a good job with that as you wouldn't notice but the grass on the greens is stupidly long as they don't want to cut them down to help them repair. Lots of greens still have patches that look like disease and if you have to putt through one then it's pot luck and your ball will jump a few inches in the air.

The greens must be rolling at a solid 5 on the stimp, putts slow up very, very quickly. As one of the group said last night "I can actually hear my putt rolling through the grass".

Lots of angry members now.

Wow...😱

Yeah, it's been a shock to everyone I've spoke to. The place has always been known to have good greens if nothing else. During winter they were great, much better than they are now. Just with the really dry and cold spring they have never really recovered. I'm not an agronomist so I've no idea what the main cause is but something must have gone wrong. No idea if it was preventable or not either but I hear people in the bar say "I've been here for X years and I've never seen the greens this bad".

People rushed to your course in recent years because of bad winters. It would be an irony if they now lost members because of a 'good' summer. Hopefully they get it sorted. There is no pleasure is hearing any club having greens issues, it is so central to any course.

Exactly as Lord t should said
It was a go to course for visitors in winter time, and everytime I've played it the greens have always been very good

Hopefully it is just the strange weather and it recovers🤞

They expect the tining done last week to really help and they plan on doing it again next month I think. They tried out the tining on the chipping green and it responded really well so they are hoping the greens recovery pretty quickly now. Hope so, if they are still like this at the end of the month I'm not inviting anyone for Invitation Day.

Played at Hollywood GC near Birmingham today.

It's an interesting layout but the condition was a lot poorer than last time I played a couple of years ago.

Got onto a par 5 (the 11th) in two which is a rare event for me, using a Walter Hagen "The Haig" 1 wood and 4 wood, three putted of course.

Bottom line the round was not the best. But it was on of those days where I played a shot that just brings you back. Heavy fade on a drive, smashed a three wood which again faded into the orchard.I filled the swear box up walking to my ball.
Got to my ball and it’s an ok lie. About 12” from the base of the pear tree. A couple of trees about 15ft in front. Stood behind the ball I could see the flag waving but not the flagpole. 72 yds to the pin I knew the green slightly sloped towards the pin.
It was ideal yardage for a full 54 degree wedge. If I hit it wrong it was hitting the tree. Practice swing hit a branch and about 20 pears dropped on me. Keep yer head down Tash and whack. The connection was gorgeous it flew up and a Couple of seconds later I heard a PP say ********* **** Tash. I walked up and it was 18” from the pin. A tap in Par. Boom.
That’s what brings you back.

we had an exchange day with Fleetwood today, it was a lovely day but very windy, I started great, birdied the first, it was almost an eagle as it hit the hole but a 2 foot putt was a nice start, I also had 4 pars but 9 double bogies or worse. I did struggle with the wind, more than a couple of times I though I had hit a good shot into a green only for the ball to fall way shot. I am bac kat Fleetwood on Monday, hopefully Iwill have learnt something from today and will be able to eliminate the DBs

Really windy today, 30+mph gusts making it really tricky, watched a few putts get moved by the wind. Luckily it was a SW wind which is probably the best direction for scoring. I played really well but walked off a bit miffed after a double on the last gave me a 75 (+3) for 36 points.

Didn’t hit a good drive on the last, still had 195 to the pin into the wind so knew I’d need to hit 3 wood to get there. Decided since I was on a good score to hit 3 hybrid instead since it’s one of my favourite clubs and with OB all down the right, my miss is left with the hybrid but right with the 3 wood. Promptly blocked it straight right and OB.

Dropped a new ball and hit 3 wood to 20 foot. 🤔

Still, another cut on the way as the 75 will replace a 78, might even get me down into the 1’s for the first time ever.

Played well again today - the good form continues.

Entered the roll-up again and had a very similar round to last week's. Once again I started on the back nine and once again had a couple of bad holes early on - this time it was the back-to-back par 3s where I got a blob and a double. In fairness the greens had been sanded and worked on this week so putting was a real struggle with several putts bobbling and bouncing offline. Had scraped 16 points together by the half way point though.

Second nine was different animal. Started bogey, par, bogey, and then had a clutch finish of six pars in a row. One of those spells where golf just feels easy and you wonder why it isn't all the time. So that got me 21 more points to bring me up to 37 total (playing off 11 now). 78 gross. Delighted with that. I hit ten greens in regulation, so without the sandy greens I definitely would have had a fantastic score I think.

No money back this time, 3rd place was 38 and I was docked 1 for finishing 3rd last week so I missed out with 36. Also I didn't put a card in due to the sandy greens unfortunately, so no cut this time. But then, there's no sense getting another cut a week before my H4H defence is there? 😛

Played well today too. Expect to be in the top 20.

Can't keep every part of my game good for a whole round. Started off driving well, lost it a bit, pulled it back. Same with approach shots, chipping and putting.

If I can get it to knot together, I could knock 10 shots off instantly.

Lessons are working - cracking investment.
