I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Had the afternoon off to host my dad for a round. Played off the yellows, which for me must have been the first time in nearly a year at my place*. I'm only getting 10 shots off them now. 😬 Had a little match where I give him 22 shots.

We both played well on the front nine, aside from the 2nd which was horrendous for both of us. My dad even managed two pars which is good for him. After no halves in the first six holes, we halved the next six in a row - all square after 12. Then my dad started to tire before the end - I ended up winning 2 & 1.

I shot 80 for 35 points. I hit some wonderful shots, but again I didn't really hole any putts. At least I only three-putted once this time. Three very presentable birdie chances slipped by in the last six holes alone. That disaster triple on the 2nd and a double on the 16th were the only blots on the card really. Made nine pars. My dad managed 29 points, 18 were on the front nine though and another 6 on the next two - he always struggles towards the end of the round. Plus he was only getting 32 shots here when he's normally used to two every hole, haha. A lovely afternoon with the old man anyway. 👍🏻

*edit: I've checked, and in fact it was nearly two years since I've played a round off the yellows. 😄

@AliMc how do you play that 1st hole? Horrible hole in calm conditions, never mind windy.
Most times I can carry it with a 3 wood, from the front tee anyway, but stopping it on the green is an issue, tbf if it's from the back tee I generally just hit a 6 iron or so and wedge it up hoping to make a comfy 4, one time I had already played 18 at Dunbar and was warmed up then after a half hour lunch break hit driver to around 10 foot and canned it for a 2, doesn't happen too often!

I had a late call to see if I could fill in at Delamere Forest this afternoon, absolutely no problem, so I hot footed down the motorway, I was playing with 3 very good players, one I had played with before whose HI is around 9 and a mother and daughter who were both under 6 HI.

I started fine with 2 pars but neither were needed as 2 of the others birdied the 1st hole, my par on the 2nd wasn't wanted either, sadly my game went off after that, I did have a couple of pars that scored on the back nine, but generally it wasn't a good day for me. The other three played well and were 50 yards or more longer than me off the tee which is an unusual experience, in fact at times I felt like the high handicapper you are trying to encourage, when I got "good shot" when I hit an half decent one.

I did have a nice afternoon though, it is always a pleasure to play Delamere.

Shot 3 over on the front nine and level par the back nine......might have done a shot.

Hit my irons terrible by chipped and putted to save par most of the times.

Walked round Aberdovey yesterday while buggerlugs was playing the Junior Open. Lovely course but with a moderate wind against them both lads. (Jamie and George) were struggling to reach the fairways on some holes playing off the silver markers - and they are both decent ball strikers - identical h/caps of 4.9, the pair of younger lads in front were getting nowhere near. It made for a tough test and both lads struggled to get on a good scoring run
12 dropped shots playing into the wind versus 2 dropped shots on the holes down or across the wind - that’s links golf.

Nefyn tomorrow and it looks like Jamie is drawn with the same pp, which he’s chuffed about as they got on pretty well on their first meeting yesterday.

Weather looks indifferent again - so I’ll be having a wander down to the Ty Coch Inn while the boys battle the elements. 🍻

Weekday medal yesterday.
I had a counting score of 5.3 dropping off. Worst case was that I would go up by 0.1 only. A bit like the old days.
I replaced it with a solid score of 3.6 and I had no birdies.
A 0.2 cut to 4.3
Again, a bit like the old days.

Came 5th net out of 24

Had a knock with a couple of mates yesterday at Worplesdon golf club.
A few ropey drives and iron shots but they went straight fortunately and chipped and putted well and finished with 35 points.
We let a one ball through on the par 3 10th who hit a nice shot into the middle of the green, he then proceeded to hit another tee shot and explained he was playing a match play against himself using 2 balls. We then spent the next 4 holes waiting for him as he kept wandering across the fairway to where his other ball was. He then walked in after 14 holes. Maybe he had won or lost 5&4 😂

Not today but yesterday, played Uttoxeter off the whites, Quirky little lay out with a few blind tee shots in the opening few holes.

2nd hole a short par 4, confused me with where to aim checked the hole lay out and distance. Took a 7iron off the tee to leave it well short of a water hazard that crosses the hole. Aimed dead centre, hit flush down the middle. Only to find my ball on the adjacent hole that comes back the other way 🤷🏻! GW & 2 putts for a solid par. Other highlights the 7th hole 6iron and half a SW to about 12feet.

Definitely a course I’ll play again. But overall hit a lot of irons off the tees not because the driver was misbehaving but because of the hole shapes, course management worked better hitting 4-6 irons and leaving slightly longer approaches from the apex of dog legs instead of hitting the driver through them into the Bundu.

Overall really happy with how I played and having registered with iGolf my handicap index has come back as 6.0, happy to have that after having 5 years of not even owning clubs let alone playing. Just nice to be enjoying the game instead of worrying about handicap and board comps.

Another excellent course played today, this time I was at Formby Ladies for a county foursomes final, we started well with 10 points after 4 holes, but a couple of 3 putts, (not down to me for a change) held us back and we finished the first nine on 18 points, two more 3 putts set us back even further before we fell apart part after 14 & 15 where we both hit drives into the heather to record 2 blobs, we finished with a disappointing 29 points.
We got to the final thanks to my partners super putting in the previous round so that fact she wasn't on it today was an uncharacteristic shame, Still we had a good morning though and thats the main thing.

Having a short break away this week at Piperdam near Dundee. Brought my clubs as there is an 18 hole course on site. Played it today and was pleasantly surprised how good it was. The Pro shop was friendly and let me play for £20 (absolute bargain) as I am staying in a lodge here. Nice warm day and an afternoon tee time meant the course wasn’t too busy. Some interesting holes and a couple of the par 3’s are over water. A very enjoyable round and I will bring my clubs again if we have another break here in the future.

Played a 4 ball scramble today at Worsley Marriot and it was tight all the way round, all square up the last par 5.

Got to the green in two and two putted to end up all square.

Great round, great weather.

Nefyn for the youth today, myself, the missus and the dogs took the opportunity to walk around The Point, popped in the Ty Coch Inn for a swift one, then walked along the cliffs and back round the Championship course.

Jamie shot a decent 77 with a 1 over back nine - not bad on a course he’d never seen before.

It really is a stunning golf course, and props to the organisers who had gone to some effort to put on a great junior open (y)

Looks like I have had my best round in about 18 months so hopefully a nice handicap cut from my 18.9. The last year has been a battle. Joint winning on 39 points today.
Odd thing is I was stood on the 9th and thought use your head and just smash the 3 wood which I have been hitting really well. I promptly knobbed it into the pond 🤬

Played a senior open at Great Barr GC today, course was in good shape and the greens were excellent, really enjoyed the round.

The legendary Harold Bird used to play here when it was known as Calthorpe GC so in homage I selected as many Harold Bird clubs as I could.

1970s HB&S laminated 1, 3 & 5 woods
1950s Harold Bird 2 to Wedge plus a Slazenger Bobby Locke SW
1970s Goudie International SS300 putter

A typical round, nothing special and let down primarily by my short game, 29 points.

Birdied the 7th and hit a 300 yard drive on the 13th, yes conditions were favourable but I was still very pleased to hit that with the laminated driver.

We’re on holiday in North Wales, so took the opportunity to meet a friend and play Candy, a very interesting course, the wind wasn’t too bad until the last few holes. Tee to Green I was pretty good, I lost a few shots from not knowing the course and putting myself in bad positions, but not as many as I lost from my atrocious putting first task when I’m back at work is to book a lesson.
