Another senior open today, this time at Sherwood Forest.
Started with a decent drive, second to fringe and two more for par and 3 points, there the good scoring ended.

Decent drive on the second, pulled approach to greenside bunker, close to edge and no room to swing, two to get out and a poor 3 putt for triple, this was my typical play. Good driving, awful iron play and hit-and-miss putting.

I finished with 17 points! Last place when I left and it's unlikely that anyone will be so bad as to oust me from my grip on the wooden spoon.

My golf is dreadful at the moment.

At least you got to spend the day in Mansfield.

We played the fantastic and baffling Crook GC today with it's sloping fairways in all their glory. Despite yesterday's downpour, the course was as dry as a bone. Shot 87, I'll give myself an 8 out of 10 and come back for more soon. Everything from birdie to triple bogey, lurching from brilliance to incompetence and back again.

Played Blackmoor Friday evening
Hindhead match Saturday
Remedy Oak match Sunday
Broadstone today

All played in wonderful weather and all the courses in fantastic condition although Hindhead is stand out in that regard.

Think Broadstone is the pick of the bunch in terms of being the best set of holes but I also played my best golf by a margin there so tinted glasses.

I’m always conscious of speed of play myself. I can straddle my line before playing partners even get to the green 😂
When I 1st tried I couldn’t get a grasp of it either but watching two playing partners in our county comp I thought I’d have a go. Since then my worst score has been +4 gross and best -2 gross. Putting has been frustrating since I started golfing again as I have a lot of good birdie chances and not been taking advantage.
I didn't realise that there is a digital level on the iPhone in the Measure app. I was out in the back garden at lunchtime standing on my paving stones and measuring the slope with my phone. Turns out I can actually feel 2% and 3% slopes really easy (feels to me like I have more weight on one of my hips rather than feeling it in my feet) but I struggled between 1% and 0. If I can find a few more slopes to test it on while walking the dog this evening (yes, I'm that sad) I might give it a go in my next round.

This would be illegal to use in a comp though right??

Of course. I was guessing the slope and then using the phone to measure after and I was pretty good at the 2% and 3% ones but struggle with 1% as it felt like 0 to me.

There is nothing stopping you having a practice round though and whipping the phone out to measure to check if your feeling is correct.

Also you feel more weight on one side then try to feel if the weight is more on that heel or forefoot for an idea of uphill or downhill. Max Homa checks facing the hole then turns to his ball and does the same for conformation but that’s too much for my routine.

Before you know it and without any rhyme or reason you will start playing well again soon. At least that seems to be my experience.

Yesterday I play at bolton old links in a team open, after answering a late call to make a team up, it was very windy and the greens were quick which resulted in some interesting putting, non worse than o nthe 10th where both myself and one of the others were were both on the green of the par 5 in 3, I had a downhill putt withthe wind behind that finished up off the green whereas the other person puttign up into the wind the ball didnt reach the hole and then rolled back towards then we both ended up taking 7, made eve nmore annoying when wee finished 2 shot behind the winners.

Back at Ellesmere this morning I had a matchplay game which I won 4&3 after playing steadily, the highlight was holing a 9 iron for an eagle 3 on the par 5 11th

One of those rounds where, if there was a choice of good or bad, the coin flip came down on the wrong side...
Summed up by our 4th hole..
Great drive, 9 iron in to the raised green with a step in it
If you're short, the ball rolls up to 30 yards back towards you.
1 yard of carry..that's all I needed ...1 poxy yard. But.....the ball rolled to the right on it's way down and finished in the seat rough 4 yards from the green...
Right in the middle of a deep divot....the ball was virtually below the ground...managed to get it on the green and 2 putt for a bogey but that 1 yard of extra carry would have given me a good birdie chance.
Going through the round in the bar afterwards we came up with 2 holes where no bad breaks were present.....
Just one of those bloody rounds.... :ROFLMAO::cry:

Shot a gross 71 in our weekday medal this morning. Par 70, CR 70.8 and SR 132. Currently lying second place.
A cut from 4.7 to 3.9 looks likely.

Front nine made two bogeys from greenside bunkers and 7 pars. 17 putts was disappointing.
Back nine made one birdie 2 and eight pars. 14 putts was much better.

Lowest round since Sept 2020.

EDIT: Pardon me for bragging, but best round in nearly 3 years and all that.
Came second nett out of 38 entrants, but I will get best gross prize - chap off scratch shot 2-over with an eagle and a birdie on his card.
My card,
230628 score.jpg
Putted from off the green on 1 and 9.
10 greens in regulation.

we played ok and finised 7 under and no where near the prizes.

the winning score was a net 51 - just the 20 under par

i managed to hit a few decent drives
Your driving was awesome !
I'm not sure the 4 old ladies in front of us would agree
