I played today and..(Rolling) -originally created by JohnnyDee

Couldn’t play this weekend as I’m nursing the shoulder. So we took the kids to Worldham Golf Club and had a go on the crazy golf they have set up there near their range and Patel courts. Being competitive I obviously made sure I won 🤣

But overall I quite liked the look for the place , got decent facilities with a. Small covered track man range, additional uncovered bays , putting and chipping greens, bunker area. Padel courts and the crazy golf for kids/families. Didn’t see much of the course so might have to give that a go soon. Members were friendly and seemed quite a bit going on, location wise and facilities (especially for whole family)they have if the course matches up I may have found a new contender for a potential membership next year 🤔

Blowing a hoolie today, constant 25-30mph with gusts of I’d guess at 40. Putts moving feet due to the wind, 40 yard pitch shots going sideways etc.

Still, we managed a gross -1 between us, 37 points so decent round.

First 3 were down wind and my mate was 20 yards through the first (330 par 4) and he hit driver 9 iron into 2 which is 560 yards. Ridiculous wind.

Society outing to Thonock Park (formerly known as Gainsborough GC) yesterday. Had probably my best round ever. Ten pars, seven bogeys and, annoyingly, one blob. We were playing stableford and I picked up on the ninth after two into the same pond. Apart from that one blip, everything seemed so easy. Finding fairways off the tee made finding greens with my approach shots so much easier - this is key for me as my chipping is terrible, but it was hardly needed. My index pre-round was 16.8 and I've had an exceptional scoring reduction (thanks @Voyager EMH for explaining this!) which has put me down to 14.6 - my lowest handicap ever. We all know what golf is like though - next weekend I'll probably be back to my usual dross.

Second day at Dundonald. Due to the promised deluge we decided to play off the red tees today, around 5,600yds. Brilliant decision. There was standing water on the fairways, ball wasn't running too much, greens were softer. It made it so much more fun.

The rain came big overnight, was heavy at the start and the end. We had about 10 holes in the middle where it was dry. Better than we could have hoped for.

Played much better today. Hit some nice shots, short game was much more solid. Shaved a good 4-5 putts but at least today I threatened. Tired badly at the end, the last three holes are tough, into the wind and it was chucking it down, but ended up with 33 points. I'm okay with that.

We have one more round tomorrow, I'd happily play off the reds again. We'll discuss it tonight over a beer

Final day, I'll do a review of the set up tomorrow. First off, perfect autumnal weather. Zero wind, no rain, decent warmth. By half way around the jumpers were all off 😊.

Played so much better today. Drives were straight, irons were good, short game sharp, putting solid. I finished so many putts around the 3-4ft mark , only missing one. The sort of putts you feel you should make but on a bad day you push/pull. Make the round go better.

Only disappointing aspect was my hybrid/fairway wood which was annoyingly hit and miss. It's my main weakness, I need to work on that shot.

The pleasant weather made a massive difference, we all scored better. I was very pleased with 35 points. I left a few out there but I can't really complain. On that course, very decent playing.

Only blight, the round took 5hrs 10 😳. A full 55 minutes longer than yesterday. The issue, 2 groups of 4 balls in front of us, a party of 8, who were very much a mix of abilities with no idea of pace of play or the thought of letting people through. Had the weather not been decent I think we would have walked in before the 18 were up.

Jeez 5-10 mins that’s bad.

Played a variant of night golf comp last friday (not floodlit) Club wanted to try something fun/out the ordinary

First 9 holes was in daylight/sunset/dusk and I was really enjoying myself with a 4 over par score = 1 under my 11 handicap… then we stopped for alfresco dinner and it got proper dark before we head out for 2nd nine
Golf carts had a strip light attached to illuminate (just) for driving
Fairways were lined with spaced out glosticks (that gradually lost their glo through the night)
Tee boxes had a glostick where the markers were
Greens had a few glow sticks round them as did bunkers etc and the pin had a light at the bottom of the hole (but it barely lit up the stick)
Golf balls were those glow in the dark balls. Once you bounce them off the ground they stay lit for several minutes (but the more you use them the less minutes it stays lit for, I guess just cheap version) They were also like solid rocks and sounded awful off a driver face

Other than that nothing was illuminated, so everything from driving, walking on course, taking shots/putts was in virtual darkness except for the glowing ball and the cup (but you had to get to the ball before it ‘switched off’ or you’d be looking for a regular ball in the darkness so you could reactivate its glow

Scoring was really hard and just getting the right direction on full shots was tougher plus the ball performance needed two extra clubs, putting was close to a lottery with no breaks visible on greens. Took noticeably longer to play 2nd nine given the extra challenges
On plus side, finding a glowing ball in the long grass was easier and I even made a birdie in the dark
On the downside just getting around was a (stressful) nightmare thinking i'd twist an ankle with every step or fall in a bunker etc etc

Overall a good different golf experience. I’m sure if the club do it again then course illumination will be improved (lessons learned and all that) Good on them for trying something new

This must be a fad that's going around as my club also has a night golf event booked in, on Friday 31st. But, apparently the balls are so firm they've said you can't use woods/driver with them, it's irons only. Makes it a bit rubbish when your longest iron is a 6. It's also only six holes and they're charging £20 (with food and Halloween party afterwards) so I think I'll give it a miss. Shame as I'd have fancied giving it a go otherwise.

They really are very very solid, I admit I was hesitant to use driver but it got through unscathed. But I could easily imagine those with a faster clubhead speed than me run a higher risk of cracking the face
Bouncing the 'dead' ball off the grass isn't enough to light them up, I used the cart path or smacked it with an iron
We were only given one ball each so if you lost it way wide then you're out until you scrounged another one from the roving marshal. Luckily I kept mine all night

It was painful. We were waiting on every hole. Perhaps it goes with the territory at that sort of place? People pay a lot and even if poor they want to finish the hole. It's a tough course, too hard for some of those out there today.
Maybe some courses need a Bethpage Black “ this course is for people who can at least hit the ball”😂

My old club did these a couple of times or at least arranged it. I never managed to make it to one but thought it would be good fun. They did say though that you needed to have a runners light with you (those ones on a band you put round your head) to see where you are going for health and safety reasons.

Yeah I saw a few lads with those headlight things on, lots were using the torch on their phones
I took a magnetic night-lite thing to stick on the buggy for score card, seeing numbers on clubs etc & so I could carry it to the tee box and put it on the ground to give a wee bit of light

The downside of the extra light was looking from darkness into a torch or running light that someone had, then straight back to darkness, so your eyes never really adjusted to one or the other

On balance you do need some kind of artificial light in the group, if doing it again I’d go with something like this (especially since the buggy has USB charging ports in them)

Played in an open at Woodsome Hall today, the course was in good condition, and I played pretty well but sadly once again my putting let me down a few times.

We also have one next month but it is going to be a par 3 comp so nothing to worry about with regard to drivers. We do a similar course before the Masters and Open with a 9-12 hole par 3 set up and play greensomes as a 6 ball to get maximum people around in the evening.

That's a much more sensible way of doing it considering the balls etc. At mine they're just doing the last six holes apparently, in which there is only one iron-length par 3, and one 200+ one. There's a 400-yard par 4 in that stretch too, so it would be two 6 irons and a wedge to get there really.
