Midweek medal today. Rubbish weather forecast, 8 hours of hell at work before I could escape, a knot in my shoulder and the prospect of not having enough light left to even get round. What could go wrong?!

I reluctantly went along and got to the club to find my playing partners stood on the tee waiting. So much for a warm up!

Somehow managed to play 16 of the 18 holes 11 over, despite some nasty wind and heavy downpours. The 13th and 15th I played 3 and 4 over respectively. What a kn0b!!

Don't you just hate those little mistakes that ruin a potentially awesome round :(

On the plus side, CSS was 70 when I left (and I was told our group was the last) so I may still get a cut if my understanding is correct and the quad bogey gets reduced to a net double. A man can hope!

What makes it worse is how unpredictable this bloody game is. I can be playing blinding golf then boom! No idea what the next hole holds! Still, guess it makes it interesting! On a side note, hello roomie!! :D

The reason I posted that is because it's something I am trying to stop doing.

Failed on Sunday. Drive into a fairway bunker with a big lip and still 170 to go with a ditch halfway to the green, but there's something wrong in my head where I think I still have to go for the green because I hate dropping shots.

Took too much club, hit the lip and finished in the ditch. Penalty drop out and before I know it I'm writing a triple bogey 7 down. :(

When I do manage to stop myself doing it you can chip further up the fairway than a drive would go and quite often save par, sometimes bogey and at worst a double.

Was it just one mistake on each hole though, or was it compounding the initial mistake by trying to get it back all in one go?

Be honest now. ;)

What are you suggesting?! ;)

In all honesty it was probably a few mistakes on each hole!

First was too little club on a par 3 into the wind. Found a front bunker which I only just escaped and duffed the next shot!

Second was a poor drive into a fairway bunker, got out fine, then hit too little club on my approach and landed in a greenside bunker. Found my ball plugged under the lip! Not good!

I've chilled out now, and like HID said earlier, it'll make me think twice about those shots next time I play. At least it should! :D

it makes you think twice but it still happens, from a simple chip thinned through the green to a straight forward tee shot when the swing is going well

roomie indeed. looking forward to the weekend, should be a blast :)

I was wrong, and am pleased about it :D

As you say, a few mistakes on each hole, but none of them look like they were caused by trying to put the previous bad shot right.

Do you think the problem is technique or mental?

for me I have a mental technique :)

I guess its not so bad as a high capper but a lot more painful for someone like yourself Gary with less shots to give away

Am trying to adopt the philosophy of taking my medicine when I am off course and not going for miracle shots, combined with being sensible and not going for the pin regardless of hazards etc, but as the saying goes: The road to hell is paved with good intentions .

This was my nemisis (im at the positive thinking stage and not focussing on the negative) and certainly in the recent past i have found that focusing on the positive i.e. not dont go left thats the bunker, tight fairway small green. instead say hit it 200 yards, pin on the left leaves me loads of room on the right etc has worked for me.

I choose the smallest target i can, such as aleaf in a tree and concentrate on that and what a difference it has made.

good luck and hope it works for you.

I am a lot better at managing bad shots now than I used to be and will very rarely try and salvage par if I think the risk isn't worth it. My mindset tends to be positive and I have found that taking hazards out of play by taking the approach Joma and Stub have mentioned has helped no end.

After both of my bad holes yesterday I parred the following holes, which I was pleased with. With hindsight, I can't be too peeved with yesterday though considering the day at work I'd had, the fact that we were rushing around to beat the light, and the on off weather. I'm going to put my cock ups down to poor concentration. Still keep looking at my scores and thinking what might've been...will just have to do better during Sunday's comp!

I know what you mean, i had a net 71 (css 74) on saturday and lost our board comp by 1 shot! Had 5 3 putts and also shanked a wedge which caused a double bogey when i was only 80 yards from par 5 in 2 :(

Just have to remember its in the past and to get on with it otherwise it starts the ball rolling for more bad golf.

I'm normally inconsistantly consistent.

Can shoot a low 90 without a par or I could shoot the same score with 7 pars in there!!!

Played sunday in perfect condition and said to my old man I was going to shoot a decent score. Got my first eagle on the first and ended the front nine 2 over par with the balance of great up and downs and bad missed putts putting me about right.

Doubled the 10th after toeing my second from 160 into some lovely newly planted trees for derek and silvia!! (plant them in your garden!!!) Got my chip to the edge of the green but could have played it better, nice chip two feet past then missed the bogey putt! Bogied everything else apart from 2 pars so walked onto the 17th tee needing 8 on the next two holes for my second 79 ever.

BIG tee shot but out right inbetween the 17th and 2nd fairway. Beautiful lie, 8 iron onto the sloping fringe which killed the ball. About 35 feet left so two puts to give me a chance to birdie the par 5 18th. 3 putted!!!!

Now I'm on the 18th tee and although I know sub 80 has gone I say to my dad, I know I can get this green in two so I'm just going to beast one off the tee. PING! absolute monster, but oh pants where's my usual fade (slice) :( carried the ball 220 OB!!! Ok 3 off the tee, not as big but in the rough now. Punched out 170 left up and down for bogey I tell myself only to top the ball into the pond guarding the green. Take my drop and almost slam dunk the ball in the hole for a 7 but successfully disfiguring the cup in my attempt. 2 putt 9 round of 85!!!!

The best thing is I know I'd do the same again!!! 80 or 89 is still an 80 to me! But 79!!! WOW thats a whole new bracket!!!

Can see my handicap tumbling this summer and boy am I glad!!!!

Seemed to have made it an art form to play 14 or 15 decent holes and chuck in two or three card wreckers. Usually the same holes (par 4 3rd and par 3 6th). Not really a huge option to playing them. The 3rd you have to take driver off the tee to make the carry as its usually into the wind. The par 3 is played down a shute of trees with OB ten yards right of the tee the length of the hole and OB about 25 yards left the length of the hole. With a ditch and watyer hazard short you have to be straight and get it airborne.

Is it only me that reads this as "I hate blow up dolls"?

I normally have at least 2 doubles a round which might cost another 2 shots as I am annoyed about them cut them out and I wouldn't be too far away from 2 or 3 over
