I haven't played for almost 6 years and joined a club in January so had to put 3 cards in.
SSS is 69 and I scored 92, 79, 73

I was previously off 4, interested to see what you would give me before I receive my new handicap!

I would ask for another couple of cards to be entered. 3 is the minimum, but they can ask for more to ensure a correct handicap is allocated.

Hopefully your HC secretary does their job properly and works it out as they should or asks for another card or two, ours would take your 73 and put you off 2 (par 71). Thats what he did with me, I handed in a 90, 95 and 105, he stuck me off 19 even though I felt that was a bit harsh and knew I would struggle to play to it. 15 months later I'm down to 17 and unhappy if I don't make the buffer zone.

No he wouldn't. It's assessed against SSS and par doesn't come into it. SSS 69 suggests 4 handicap but you cannot allocate a Cat 1 handicap so the cards will have to go to the County Secretary who will give an authorisation code if he agrees a Cat 1 handicap allocation.

Sounds like yours did his job properly it's the understanding of the rule change regarding handicap allocation that causes the problems. Congu are clear on there rules.

As you say, the 73 suggests a 4 or thereabouts. So is that what the County Secretary will give? If not, am curious as what he would most likely give - and why?

From my experience, he will have a close look at the other two cards and ask questions about course and weather conditions when the 3 rounds were played.

Thanks for all the replies, still waiting to hear but will let you know the 'verdict'

The huge difference is scores is mainly down to being very rusty, I had only played 18 holes in over 5.5 years and then played the first 2 rounds in the same week, which was decent weather. The third round was this week, 6 weeks later, but I seemed to remember a few things!

As Rosecott says, its one for the County Sec. Once allocated I'd be looking at submitted cards for a wee while and talking to the County guy again to ensure the accuracy of the allocation.

I'm not convinced he would though. It appears he did with you but not me. I put 101, 95 and 84 on our par 71, and he took my middle card and gave me 24. If he had gone the same way he did with you I would have been off 13 and struggled massively, bearing in mind I'm struggling to play to 20 at the moment.

Tricky one. I think another couple of cards especially if they are in the same vein as the 73 would give the handicap sec enough ammo to go to County and get a cat 1 handicap. If you shoot a little higher then I reckon he'll go as low as he can to the cat 1 limit.

Any cat 1 play can shoot a round in the 90s with just a few unlucky bounces, a handful of tricky lies and some missed putts.

Makes us mere mortals feel better about ourselves :D

given the subsequent info re the timing of the cards I would certainly be asking for another card (at least) given the 'trend' and 6 week gap to the best card. As set out the info is a little sketchy for the county to make any meaningful analysis beyond the obvious '4 looks safe'. In the absence of a further 73 or better I would stick with my initial observation - which is consistent with your latter observation :)

Sounds like you got lucky with 24 and no rounding.
