First, take a safe club off the first tee - 3 wood should do. Pull this OOB. This adds two strokes to your card before you've even started.

Feel free then to play like someone off half your handicap until you get to the 14th, albeit throwing one 3-putt in there.

Once you have arrived at your over the water approach shot, make sure to sherman this into the water. Follow this two holes later with a topped drive into another water hazard and, last but not least, slice your drive on 18 OOB as well.

Congratulations - you have just played to handicap and avoided a cut of some 5-6 strokes (inc the ESR you would surely have got)

Can anyone guess how my medal went yesterday? :D

Without going into a lot of detail, my last 2 medals have been 10 over handicap and 9 over handicap........ another method people could give a bash!

I empathise matey:smirk:

I was doing well and only 5 over after 16 in pouring rain yesterday in 2nd rnd club champs, with no relief for casual water as all the fairways were sodden...........then with 78yds to the 17th I sherman tanked a SW OB, then J arthured the dropped ball for a triple, 18th had 1 J arthur and took me 5 to get on and 2 putt for a 7-7 finish- stuff still hasnt dried out- I HATE PLAYING IN RAIN!

Seems like a fairly standard Cat 4 performance.

How to avoid handicap cut/.1 back - dont put your card in. Played yesterday morning, at least 15-20 out before us, when we put our cards in only one other in the box??? Makes it all a bit of a farce. How many clubs on here do you have to sign in before going out?

i have been playing great golf scoring 40 points plus, then entered comp conditions were perfect, guess what everything went wrong, a mixture of bad luck and bad club selection and guess what came in with a terrible 26 points felt i left myself down badly. not entering a comp for a while now until no 1 im confident, no 2 they bloke i hate playing with is out playing with someone else at least 6 holes behind me

Played like a muppet last week blowing all my shots (and two others) on the front nine (triple and quadruple bogies helped). Came back in +5 gross but never hit a decent shot. All prepared to go up another 0.1 but apparently hit the buffer on stableford adjustment. Seems I can't get an increase playing total dross

Sounds like most of my medal rounds!

Par 3 first, regularly OOB in the driving range. Goes well for 14 holes, then hit a 6-8 on the 17th and a 6 or 7 on the 18th.
Card looks terrible, gets me in the top 3 for some winnings and the handicap stays the same.

I worked hard to get rid of the 8+ scores off the card now it's the 7's that need to go.

Yeh, play like a numpty but still come in with 36pts.... and complaining ;)

Touché :D

I would rather play off 14 and title the thread 'how to get .1 back'. Rosecott's comment probably isn't far from the truth though. I'm a cat 4 for a reason. Costing myself 10 strokes through poor basics is what cat 4s do. When I stop doing that, I won't be cat 4. At least I know I just need to keep going out there, practicing and eventually I'll put 18 holes of golf together - soon I'll miss the days when a 93 came in at level par :one:

Some good advice there in the original post, unfortunaley there isn't much water at my club, but luckily lots of thick rough to throw shots away.

I was 1 under par after the first 6 holes on friday, sure i was going to be beat my handicap, managed to come in with an 86, 1 over it.

I don't know how i mange it :mmm:

You can avoid a handicap cut by not submitting your card but you can't avoid a 0.1 increase by doing the same.

Easy, just don't enter the comp and play with your 3 mates right in the middle of the comp and play off the same tee's:)

Its what guys do at my club

Simple really, play like a complete Jessee on two or three holes, thro' in a bit of mis-fortune and you have the perfect recipe for a 0.1 shot prezzie, I know I repeat it week in week out just now.

Well it turns out I missed winning the comp by 3 strokes, but CSS went up so I did get a .4 cut so its still going the right way.
