How many of the top 100 courses have you played

Not many - probably about a dozen but haven't got the list to cross reference. Cribbing from Smiffy's list, the two Berkshire, Bearwood Lakes, St Georges, The Belfry and the Old Course.

If things like the West Course, Swinley and New Zealand are still on there I've done those too.

I have played 16 of them , mostly Irish courses. I have also been a member at 2 of them - Silloth on Solway in Cumbria, and Bearwood Lakes.

Silloth, for example, is good value. The green fee is £45 for a round in summer.

Only 7 to date -

Kingsbarns,
Castle Stuart,
Machrihanish (Old)
Machrihanish Dunes,
Ladybank,
Panmure and
Nairn Championship

Plans to play 3 more next year all being well.

26 - and none in Ireland or Lancashire !! In the order they are ranked:

No no no no no :D

Now i know that these thinsg are highly subjective, but on what on earth basis do they get Bearwood lakes above these 4 courses (and i havent even got the full list!!))

Absolutely no way whatsoever that this can have anything to do with course design, course quality, or even that dodgy criteria of "tradition/heritage". I have played all of those and there is a serious discrepancy here.

I have played BLs approx 5 or 6 times. There is 1 lake and a small pond ! True the fairways are nice (apart from the 2 holes that are always covered with goose crap), the greens are always in very good condition, but so is the case with all of the above. There is no way that the views can match the trees on the courses above.

i like Bearwood Lakes, honest, But lets not get ahead of ourselves - this is seriously just a victory of marketing over substance ???

Seriously guys you've got a good course and clubhouse, and a nice range and a good putting green, and an exellent 11th hole hut, but how do they get you ahead of these classics ?

Careful, the Go Kart posse will be after you for your heretics...although I have to agree with you....BL is well overated in my book...

Anyway, back to the OP, Macrahanish (sp) in March will take me to 50! :)

Well, that is ratings for you. You have one view, others have another. They are all added together, and the end product balances those differing opinions.

The course above BL in those rankings was The Belfry (Brabazon). Now that is a crap and forgettable golf course, and BL is better any day and al day long. Yet some people like The Belfry and think it is great. No accounting for taste.

Looking thru the list again there's no way Ladybank,Panmure or Montrose Medal are better than my track Scotscraig but everyone has a different view i suppose.

How can you compare a parkland course like Ladybank with a links like Scotscraig? Both are great courses but completely different. I know which one I prefer.

Three:
Turnberry - Ailsa
Royal North Devon
The Belfry - Brabazon

I thought I'd played a few more but they seem to have been demoted since I visited.

As always, each to his or her own but I disagree - I think Bearwood is better than its 80+ rank - the readers poll on top100 courses just ranked in 3 in GB&I (not their official rank but a component of it based on their user reviews). I am not going to try and justify that, although if I had only one course/club to play for the rest of my life it would be at the top of my list, but it shows that it is widely liked among other golfers as well.

I meant Wentworth West as the first Wentworth on my list. And that is one example of an overrated course (please feel free to go and spend £360 plus compulsory caddie) - I would easily prefer Bearwood. And, marking a course down because it is new or does not have much history or as you say "how do they get you ahead of these classics", that is just plain wrong and shows the inbuilt bias in most ranking list!

And, "there is one lake and a small pond"! No comment - although there are 3 proper lakes and one smaller one that is also the water source for the course - but I suppose if it had much more water like Pyrford or Traditions, then it would be better!

"No way the views can match the trees on the courses above" I might suggest to our greenkeper, who is one of only 50 mastergreenkeepers in the world" and the managers, that intead of removing some trees, as they have been doing that they should put more in to close off the internal views and ensure that the playing conditions become wetter and worse - maybe if they do a great job they can end up with something as boring as the Duchess at Woburn

"Absolutely no way whatsoever that this can have anything to do with course design, course quality" This is the most important thing to me but I guess all those positive reviewers and comments must have been thinking of something else as you state "a serious discrepancy here" and "a victory of marketing over substance" I will pass on your comments to Carl to let him know that he has been doing a great job of pursuading people to enjoy thir golf experience despite an inferior product - a pretty impressive achievement.

Havent played Ladybank but I preferred Panmure and Montrose to Scottscraig (played all of them in 2005) but maybe that was only because the pace was agonizingly slow there whereas at Panmure and Montrose we were about the only players on the course
