• Thank you all very much for sharing your time with us in 2025. We hope you all have a safe and happy 2026!

How good is your short game?

Most of the time I'm pretty handy around the greens, but just as I'm getting complacent with it, I develope the touch of an arthritic baboon.

Yeah I'm really not far off, I just tend to take my time with short chips around the green etc, always had a feel for them. 99% of chips are left to within 'gimmie' range. Just takes a hell of a lot of practice! haha.
What do you play off JB ?

My short game is rubbish., and having the chipping yips doesn't help. Might be why I like links golf so much, as it means I can putt from off the green rather than chip. I can chip using a putting stroke, so ok on the very short chips but from more than 10 yards just happy to get it on the green.:(

I'd prefer not to, but I don't mind having to go to my 52* around the greens. However, I often seem to get a lot of bite on my chips and short pitches often ending up in me being short instead of actually giving the hole a run for its money. Also, I do know when to adopt softer hands but sometimes I just don't swing through it enough.

Going further away and I'd much prefer a 100yd shot than a 60 yarder and I'll put this down to my brain and ability being able to compute a full swing easier than a 3/4 soft swing.

I think this thread is turning into the chipping equivalent of forum driving distances. We've got some very good golfers on here ;)

Allow me to redress the balance!

My short game is poor at best. On some days it can be absolutely embarrassing.

As someone else posted, if I had a short game I'd be fairly confident of handicap under 5.

The OP was asking about your short game arround the green after just missing them, from here I expect to up and down most of my missed shots. Think maybe some folk are getting mixed up thinking how their overall stats are even from missed greens 100 yards away, totally different question and one I would expect to have higher amount of missed up & downs.

You're absolutely right Mike, please forgive me.

I reckon about 60-65% up and down. The remainder is split, again as a guestimate, at around 70/30 in favour of 2 putts. The latter being those duffs that the better players don't often succumb too. Perhaps 5 shots around...?

That was me NWJ.

Mike, I understood the OP to mean exactly what you say above. It doesn't change my answer. My short game is poor.

The no.1 player on the PGA tour for Scrambling is 65.41%. The PGA tour average is about 56%.

I think a few folk on here would get a fright if they found out what their actual Scrambling percentage is.

Makes the forum distance threads look modest by comparison.

I think at forum meets people should have paper pinned to their shirts like athletes do with their race numbers on, only ours should have claimed stats from all the different threads like driving distance, FIR, GIR, up and downs etc. to see how accurate they are.

This place gets worse. :(

Sorry McBroon, it was not directed at you. There was a few posts form some guys who seemed to miss the OP's question.

To be fair (which is not how I feel like being at the moment), scrambling stats are based on making par from a missed green. Big difference to this question, where up and down from just off the green for bogey would count, but pitching from 50yds after chipping out from a bad drive wouldn't.

As you've quoted percentages I'll assume that's a response to my post. OP said "just missing greens". Well I do this quite a lot, but I don't putt off a fringe or false front, I chip/pitch. I do this reasonably well. Had OP said "just missing greens by 20yds+ in semi-rough" (scrambling I believe?), I'd have given a non-PGA comparative response. Not that I knew I had, but nor did I use google to quickly compile and check my response and interpretation of the question :D

Peace, man.

You assume wrong...

Well this is my main issue and it has been all season. Just missing greens and failing to get up and down. I reckon been truthful about 20% conversion rate. I have practiced and practised but getting it right on the course is the real issue. I miss way to many greens in reg and fail to convert the chances giving me way to many bogeys.
