How good is your short game?

And how important are those 'up and downs' for the momentum of your round

Vital!

My best round this year I was -4 for five holes (just missed the birdie on the 1st) before missing the greens on 6 and 7 but managing to make pars. Going great guns at that point.

Then 7 bogies in a row, just couldn't hit greens and couldn't save the pars.... Totally changed my mindset and confidence, I was struggling rather than attacking.

Finished with a decent score (+4) and a cut but really disappointed about "what might have been".

And how important are those 'up and downs' for the momentum of your round

critical to everything

once I start 'missing' I start questioning everything....:(

after a few decades of work on this area of the game I now have confidence I will hit the shot 'properly' over 90% of the time, unfortunately I am a very poor reader of the impact of slopes on pace and, playing a lot of away golf, can get it very wrong far to often at times (ie there's way too much variation between the rounds I am close to 100% and those that are nearer 0%!

we have a long course with relatively small greens - it's easy to have rounds with a lot of chipping!

14% according to SS2. Not getting worse but not improving much either. Have neglected a little of late in favour of just going out and playing and trying to just hit it and have fun. Winter work for me very much all short game orientated with just some tidying up on the swing

I think the lower h/caps expect to get up and down more often than say the 15 and above who may just settle for on the green and 2 putts.
But a missed par save through either a poor chip or a missed putt can have a huge impact on not only your mood for the next tee shot but a dent in confidence for the next time you miss a green.
So not just a shot dropped but the potential to spoil the whole day.
This IMO is where the tour pros excel, not only in how good they are around the greens but also their ability to recover and birdie the next hole when they make bogey (The bounce back stat I believe its called)

My short game is normally pretty good, i can play chips pitches etc with different clubs depending on my mood. It could still be better

My long game is pretty ropey so thats what I really need to work on.

Now beginning to get the hang of it, playing links this year has helped me, with bump and runs, and contsant practice with my wedges have helped me get over obstacles like bunkers. And full wedge shots from 50-100 yards has improved a lot.

How good am I?

Not great but improving

That's really interesting. I play at 2 clubs, 1 is a links which is the one I play the most. My short game right now is awful and I think if anything, my game has got worse as a result because I have to chip/pitch less as I can putt around the greens more

I play links on average once a week (20. Miles away) and my parkland course 2-3 times per week, playing bump and runs or putting around greens at southerness , basically made me realise that I needed to add consistent chipping to my game for my parkland course, and made me think about which short game shot I need to play for any situation. I believe this is why I have reached my target of a 12 handicap from 16 this season, and I do believe that I have a couple more rounds left in my this season to reach 11/10.

Bob, what do you class as lower handicaps? And from how far are we getting up and down from???

Iv must admit this season my arou d the green has been very poor, at best I'd say 25-30%, which I think is very unacceptable, mainly it's my chips/pitches that I don't hit close enough, my putting is good but I don't give myself enough chances of holing the putt because the chip is so far away, I beleive the % of holing drops dramatically from 4 foot as oppose to 7..

Today, I failed to get up and down 3 times out of 3 before we were rained off after 9 holes, and tbh it DOES destroy your momentum and confidence. S

From 100 - 50 yards from the edge about 20%, 50 - 10 yards about 30% and from 10 yards from the green about 45%.
I still struggle more getting to the green but it's slowly improving.

We all miss greens, some just off the edge but some badly...... in bushes, bunkers trees etc.
But when you've just missed the green and are not in trouble as above, how often do you get up and down...say as a percentage?

And how important are those 'up and downs' for the momentum of your round ?

Hardy ever if I'm being honest Bob.

Don't get me wrong, when I miss greens I can normally chip close enough to give me a chance at a save, but more often than not miss the putt.

Yes I am working on it.

My up & down percentage is pretty much 100% with short chips around the green etc, it's not so much momentum for me it's more of a relief knowing if I miss the green I can at least make something of the hole, it's good to fall back on but I don't rely on it! Short game should be worked on the most in my opinion though.

100%!!?? Wow, brilliant.
