Practicing

Why not do that stroke with a wedge though? Surely you are giving up control using the hybrid?

I've a 27 degree hybrid and I don't think I'd ever get better at chipping with that over my sand or lob wedge from the rough.
Because I'm going to knife or duff it sometimes with a wedge. Both of those things are almost impossible with hybrid. Or to put it another way, the outcome of knifing or duffing the hybrid are way less punishing than doing it with a wedge. You knife a wedge, it's miles through the other side of the green, you thin a hybrid it just runs out a bit more. You duff a wedge and the ball goes nowhere, you hit ground first with a hybrid it just glides into the ball and works fine. I guess it's pretty much like using a chipper but you don't have to waste a spot in your bag. It's a shorter swing than a wedge too due to considerably less loft, so less can go wrong. Just a quick punch to pop it out.

I'd love to see a video of this hybrid chip in action. I'm sure it has its place. Just probably not something I'd ever be doing. I'm extremely comfortable with a wedge in hand around the green. Its my favourite thing to practise and the best part of my game.

I think Dan Grieve has a demo of a hybrid from rough but it wouldn't be my choice of shot. I'd rather get some more loft and get it running. If you have to go over a bunker it takes the hybrid out of the thinking anyway.

First video I saw when I searched it, this is pretty much it except I don't really put it back in my stance, it's around middle.

Useful i suppose if you are near the edge of the green and don't need to carry it far.

I really wouldn't fancy it from any kind of decent length rough.

I said long-ish grass in my first post. Like second cut, but close to the green. I'm not talking about grass that completely covers the ball.
