How do you rate your bunker skills?

How do you rate your bunker play?
Good, bad.... a bit of both?

Not bad from greenside, ok from fairway (80yds or more) but terrible at those 30-40 yarders.

I always take too much sand with fairway bunker shots. I try to keep my legs "quiet" and not dig my feet down too far into the sand as all the instructional books say, but I still end up fatting it.
If I try to stay up on the ball and pick it off cleanly I end up hitting a massive thinned slice

Poor for a single figure handicapper. Usually get out but have little confidence and to be honest if it comes out I'm happy. We have no bunker practice facilities and I would certainly benefit from a half hour stood in sand once in a while.

Saturday afternoon on the 17th I splash out to 4 foot and and sink the putt.

Sunday morning on the 1st it takes me three shots to get out, which simply somes up my bunker play, INCONSISTANT!!!

For a 28 handicapper I'd say I wasn't bad on greenside in the sense that so far most of the time I can get out. Direction and distance control? Haven't a clue, just happy to be out of the sand pit. There are practice bunkers at my new course so looking forward to getting in them to learn more about bunker play.

If 10 is a tour pro and 1 is the guy from the Hamlet advert, then I reckon I'm about a 6. I'm happy if I get it to a distance I shouldn't 3-putt from but have a half decent chance of 1-putting.

As for fairway bunkers, I play it way back in my stance and hit down on it rather than trying to pick it off the surface.
My problem with fairway bunkers is trying to do too much and hitting the lip.

oooo! not good at the moment from greenside bunkers, I feel a Homer moment coming on, lesson. Fairway bunkers unbelievably really good, no problem at all.

Only part of my game that is as good as when i was playing as a kid. Bunker shots need the correct technique, otherwise you will always suffer. Good tip imagine you are trying to balance a glass on the face of the club for as long as possible through the swing. Also same length back and forward,no stabbing just commit to the shot. Let the flange do its work.

Wish i could get my chipping and putting back to the standard of the old days :( :(

Average. I can usually get out ok but I've developed a penchant for not taking enough sand recently and sending them 30 yards through the green. I've been onto the very wet practice bunker on Sunday and drew a line 2 inches behind the ball and focussed on hitting the line. One real thin and one fat that stayed in the trap but the others all came out between 3 inches and ten feet of the hole.

I'm not too bad on fairway bunkers but it's something I never get to practice. The practice bunker at the club has a big lip and makes it hard to replicate a fairway bunker shot as picking it clean normally smacks it into the top of the face

I would say i'm pretty solid from round the greenside and not too bad from the fairway ones.
I haven't seen you play a bad bunker shot Dave.

Last year I was very tidy at getting up and down out of greenside bunkers. This year hasn't been so good I don't know if it's down to changing my wedges.
Like most mid-high handicappers im crap from fairway bunkers and have vowed to play it out safe with a wedge from now on.

Getting the ball out isn't a problem, but I'm clueless on distance control. I actually prefer long bunkers shot becuse I know I can just whack it
that one's me, always get it out on the fairways but can take a few shots around the green. Too scared to hit it so fluff it. so to answer the question, hellish.

Interesting thread this one.

Im confident enough greenside providing im not on a downslope, then i think i'll get it out but not necessarily within 20 feet! I dont mind the flat or the upslopes at all, feel i can get it up and down.

Fairway wise, can be trickier, try to stand up more, back in stance and take more club, punch it out kinda thing. Not quite as confident unless im within 100yards.

My course management is good though on my own track and have only been in 1 bunker this year (in 8 rounds). If i played different courses I'd def practice greenside ones though.
