Carry? 😁

If only. Downhill on a frozen fairway!

In response to the OP. ..

Range balls are very rarely premium. Where I go they're usually, in this weather, all congregated around the 150 - 170 mark.

Until.very recently i used to beat myself up about how far they weren't going and frequently ruined any practice time by trying to beat the living daylights out of them to get back to normal distances.

Better off just focusing on strike and dispersion like Homer says

not a lover of the really cold weather ,but if its showing above zero then i will play ,what i have found that the ball dosent fly as far and i find myself clubbing up to compensate accordingly. im not the longest out on the course but then again im not the shortest ,but for a 135 yd shot i have been known to hit a 6 iron ,,and thats not wind against either.

Tbh I haven't ever really seen much difference with the ball in the air - the only difference I see when the conditions change are how the ball reacts when it lands - that's where the distance changes for me

If you go down from 25 to zero degrees C, the increased density of the air will reduce carry distance by about 10% due to increased aerodynamic drag on the golf ball. If the fairways are wet and soggy, as they tend to be at this time of year, then you can also expect less roll after landing, unless the ground is frozen solid, when the ball may roll much further than normal.

I get the impression that hard one piece range ball are more affected by cold than normal golf balls! :(

You can buy range balls based on what % of full distance they fly, so you've lost distance to start with.
Add to that the fact that old range balls sometimes have the dimple pattern worn away, balls fly shorter in the cold and when they're cold, and it's pretty much pointless working on anything to do with distance at the range, especially in winter.

I can however give you your lost yards back on your 7 iron. Hit a 6 iron.

That might appear flippant, but you'd be amazed how many people don't do it, and keep flailing away with ever more uncontrollable swings with the wrong club just because they think they should hit it X yards.

Ours are exactly the same at the range. I never really take the distance into account as they are range balls after all. Get the odd few balls that are just smooth, no dimples left on them at all. Now they go with a funky flight! Just drop out the sky after the initial strike!

I have been happy with the distance my low compression balls have been going over the winter.
Not as much run by irons to greens are going about my normal distance.

I find that par-4 holes I can reach with, say, a driver and a 7 iron in the Summer, become a driver and a 3 hybrid on a cold winter's day! :(
