100 yards is about a 3 quater sand wedge for me
So usually im in with a chance at birdie, but 9/10 i come away with a par

Yes and no. But recalling everytime I've got closer or further away is impossible. Thats the reason I said the stats mean nothing to us, only due to the fact they are so accurate.

I posted that link because I wanted to show that even the professionals do well to get inside ten feet. I was merely pointing out that we, as amateurs, shouldn't beat ourselves up for hitting the green 40 feet from the pin.

This thread and that stat have made me feel so much better. So thank you SB. I'll no longer be beating myself up from 100 yards out

I would think if I hit the green more or less centrally then i'd be happy. From there i'd have a birdie putt and hopefully a stress free par. Some days you feel bang on and then i'd be hunting the flag and would expect no further then 15-20 ft.

This came up when I had a lesson. I said that I wasn't making enough birdies, or recovering with U&Ds often enough as I wasn't getting close enough to allow my poor putting to stand a chance.

The pro then quoted some stats about the pro's and suggested i was actually getting quite close in reality and shouldn't beat myself up about it.

I was guilty of getting cross at myself, I blame Dave Peltz's "magic 8 feet" principle. It's all fine and well if you're actually Tom Kite but I came to realise that I'm just a load of "Tom Kite". I still think his short game book is good in principle, it's helped my short game no end, but I have to be realistic regarding distance from the pin.

Now I'm happy if I hit the green, give myself a couple of putts for a par and walk to the next tee :)

The more I think of it, the more I realise that my pitching is probably the strongest part of my game :) The thing that kills me is when I hit a bad shot off the tee and often I think that's due to a lack of concentration. Plenty of food for thought and looking forward to my lunchtime pitching practice :)

Following on from Bob's thread about how you would play your pitch shots, and from other posts I've read in the past about lying up to favourite distances.

How close do you normally/on average get to the GREEN from, say, 100 yards out?

Edited to suit my current game .. lucky to hit the green at present . better chance from 200..

Interesting stats from the PGA Tour...

Life saver , well ok Golf saver .. thank you for that, i feel slightly better
Bizarrely I find I can get closer from nearer 150 yds out than I do from 100 yds

Work on distance control - If you hit the right distance every time your not likely to be too far away!

from 100 yards in I want to be putting with my next shot, our course isnt the longest so short game is key, i spend a lot of time practicing from 100 yds and less...

On the green from 100 yds dissapointed if not.
My aim for the next couple of months is to get my handicap down so hitting the green more regularly
is the best way of doing it. Mind you my chippings improving.

100 yards from where?

From the middle of the fairway looking for inside 10 ft, 15 ft ok but outside of 20 ft is poor.

Different kettle of fish from the rough, depending on the lie or angle to flag on the green can be a good shot.

Links pot bunker then getting the bloody thing out is a good shot!

100 yards from where?

Normal/average shot. If you can't understand the meaning of those erms I have set out a couple of examples for you:

If your average shot, from 100 yards, is from a links pot bunker then take it from there.

If your average shot, from 100 yards is from thick rough, down hill lie, ball below your feet with the prevailing wind into your face, then take it from there.

You'v done very well to get down to 4.1 if either of those is your average approach shot!

Main aim is to be on the green. I'm usually aiming for the middle rather than shooting at the flag. Pleased with anything inside 20 ft as that reduces the likelihood of a 3 putt.

However we have a few long greens (35+ yards front to back) and on those if I had a 100 yard shot I would be disappointed if I was on the front when the pin is at the back or vice versa as that would mean I could be 60 feet away and there'd be a good chance of a 3 putt.

I understand what you are saying but I was trying to make the point that where does the average golfer play this 100 yard shot from?

Most replys look like they are playing from the centre of the fairway, thats great most of us will be looking to hit the green, knock it close depending on ability level. Golf's not that simple how many times are we 100 yards from the green but in the crap.

If the question relates to from the centre of the fairway, flat lie and no wind then I would be expecting to hit it inside 15 feet and be unhappy if I didn't do that.
