I have been playing now for about three months, but have only actually managed to get the confidence to start going out beyond my local par three in the past month or so! After having massive issues going from the range mat to terra ferma, I have been seriously disheartened! The combination of a lesson last night, a bit of a 'eureka' moment and a day off saw me back at the course today.

Alas, my second full round of 18 today and I scored 94 (24 over) and I must say, I am dead chuffed! My first time around I scored 106 at the same course, so I can safely say that there is improvement there! I did manage some terrible holes, but there were 4 pars on my scorecard too.

Despite being rather chuffed with myself, I now know that I have noticeable gaps in my bag. Namely between my 3h and my 5i, and my PW and my 56*. What a pain!

Well done! You'll probably find that your pitching wedge is something like a 46 or 47 degree club. If you can find a cheap 51/52 degree wedge on ebay you'll plug that gap easily if you want to.

Best of luck!

Glad 'hooked' was used in the context it was! Try and stand tall on the [real] tee's and put your mind back into Par 3 zone. 94 after three months is a great base to work from but do expect more downs than ups as you find your feet. Quite simply, don't be disheartened by the 'downs' and take all the positives, however great or small, into your next round. And whatever the weather, if you're enjoying it, then so what.

If you have booked a number of lessons, perhaps let them play out before investing more in your bag, or ask your pro to let you have a bash with some clubs you feel may fill in the gaps.

Good luck and welcome to the forum!

Ohh pretty local, Im in a similar boat. OK I used to be a 12 handicapper but not played competitively since last season. I am also playing only my local par 3 (cambridge lakes) and keen to get out on big boy course. PM me if you fancy a round somewhere, im free weekdays and some weekends (unemployed atm). Not this weekend tho as Ive got family stuff coming out of my ears, unexpectedly but the wife likes to organise things behind my back (even after saying I could golf this weekend!).

Get yourself a gap wedge and find a pro that teaches from grass. There can be a huge difference from mats where the club skids and so a potentially heavy strike will actually come off the face as an ok shot, where grass will be a big divot and it goes nowhere. I think once you get use to ball striking (and better technique from the lesson) and a gap wedge, you'll start flying and scores will tumble

I have a 47*, 52* and 56* ad the bottom end of my bag, works pretty well for gapping at 105, 80 and 60 yards on flat ground with no wind.

Its annoying my iron distances all end with a 5 though...

Apologies for digging up my old thread, but it is mine after all! Cheers for the advice above, I did read and take it all in which lead to me checking my club lofts out on Wilson's website. The Di9 PW is 42.5*, which explains why I was seeing such a large gap! Since my last post I managed to pick up a 4-SW set of Di9s from eBay for a steal, including an approach and gap wedge. Issues solved! Just need to sell the old set now! I have only got out the once due to my sister getting Married!

In this aforementioned round, I got in 9 in at my local hitting 13 over. Loads of room for improvement, mostly from club choice on my second shot :D After the lesson mentioned in my first post I am hitting the ball much more consistently from grass which should see me a lot of points off the scorecard.

@ScienceBoy, I may well take you up on the offer! I am working a shift at the moment, so will have a LOT of time off; I may even see about joining one of the local clubs!

Quick quick, give it up before you get properly sucked in!

Too late.... Maybe get yourself a 4 hybrid and a 50* gap wedge.

94 is great shooting second time round. Good luck going forward!
