Home comps when no chance of winning

Do you enter pairs comps on your home course even if you know your pairing would have no chance of winning?

I was helping two higher handicaps players to enter a comp yesterday both of whom I had just partnered in a team comp.

My thoughts were " why are you bothering you, you clearly have no chance of getting anywhere near the prizes."

I play any comps I can. Anyone can have their day and end up in the contention. I play for enjoyment and to keep my handicap up to date and representative of my golf! Any time I win or end up in the prizes is just a bonus

What someone else does is up to them. They may well recognise they may struggle to win but want the experience for the future.

Golf competitions are strange things, you can shoot your best score, play better than before and walk away with no prize at all.

Unless you could the enjoyment of the game, a handicap cut etc.

Also you can play terrible, hack it around and barely make buffer and win a prize. I have won competitions on 37 points where divisions were won with 35. Some days everyone has a bad game and yours was the best of a bad bunch.

Of course, my chances of winning any comp are slim to none. I like playing golf though! I’d even play foursomes over not playing at all.

I do. A pairs comp for me is a bit of a social thing. I play it for fun. Clearly if the entry fee was silly then no but assuming it's the usual entry fee then not a problem.

You never know, you might have an exceptional day, dovetail with your partner and do okay.

Both players could probably play on the day without entering the comp.

They are both ageing players whose games are on the decline.

My initial thinking is “what a really poor thing to think” from you - maybe you don’t understand that not everyone enters a competition just looking to win , some just enjoy the game or the company or the walk out.

And also to judge people’s chances as well - would love it if they entered and then won

First 4BBB board comp of the year at mine resulted in a 3 way tie, to be played off; 1 & 6 pairing, 6 & 7 pairing & a 20 & 27 pairing. Yup, the higher handicaps have no chance.

Very, very poor from the OP.

Perhaps on the day you partnered them they had a bad day, or perhaps you simply need to change your thinking and let people enter what they want without judging them.

As for the question I enter everything I can as I have this thing called a handicap that evens the playing field seems to work sometimes others not but it's still enjoyable trying..

Surely if they are eligible to enter the comp, its their choice to enter? They're adults who, by the sound of it, have been around the game for a while. I'm sure they are capable of exercising their choice with realistic expectations.

As an ex-chairman of handicaps/comps I could list a few examples of guys who were not expected to get in the top 100 in a comp going on to win it. One 73 year old whose handicap was 10, but he was struggling to get close to it, beat his age in the club's top Open to qualify for the knockout stage played as a semi-final on the BH Monday morning and then won the final that afternoon.

Well intentioned the OP may be I actually find it a touch arrogant to suggest someone shouldn't play.

i don't enter anything to win, just to get my handicap down.

I'll play with anyone, any time so yes I wouldn't worry about it. I'd take my pride from helping a fellow member and not for trying to win.
