Hi all,

Just a quick introduction and would like some advice. Been playing golf since October/November last year and have the complete golfing bug! I know it would be quite difficult to tell without seeing my swing but im hoping it may be a few general things im doing wrong, i tend to slice my driver shots to the right and hook my iron shots to the left about 65-75% of the time, any idea why?

I'm Also on the market for a new driver. Looking to spend around £100 open to suggestions.

Cheers Tom

welcome to the forum Tom

take the £100 and put it towards a series of lessons with a local pro rather than a new drivr, will get much better reward fo it

Well i'm becoming a member at my local club tonight, i'lll discuss lessons. I have been thinking about getting lessons, but i thought if i could get half decent without lessons then when i have lessons it will make more of a difference! :)

Much better to have the lessons as early as possible to enable you to learn the key fundamentals as quickly as possible before you ingrain any bad habits

im not normally one for saying no to buying a new driver, but definitely think youd benefit more from a few lessons in this instance

Hi Tom,

AS has already been said, spend the money on lessons, it's much easier (and cheaper) to have lessons early rather than get one to iron out any faults you've already developed.

Welcome to the forum

Hi and welcome Tom

I think the guys are right about lessons and if your just about to join a new club then having lessons from the club Pro might just be a sound move.

Very common mistake, by all means get loads of practice and become competent at hitting the ball, however dont leave it too late to get a lesson, if you do the pro could 'rebuild' your swing and it will feel like starting all over again.

My advice would be to get 2 or 3 lessons very early, then practice, play, lessons, practice, play , lessons etc

I agree that lessons at this early juncture while there is still a relatively blank canvass to work with wil be better in the long run. Once a fault is ingrained it becomes much harder to get rid of it. At least if you get the basics right from the outset you can build a good swing onto that base and then progress much quicker
