Has Equality Harmed Womens Golf. Peter Alliss Thinks So

Doesn't sound too bad!

They have a lot of comps on a Tuesday (traditionally ladies day) and they have the tee booked then as well for as long as they need. Sometimes these fields are bigger than a weekend. Members know (or should as its published in diaries, online and on a big board outside the locker room) if they have the tee booked and can work around it starting earlier or later. As it should be. I think they are treated equally and with the same respect as the men's section and it seems most parties are happy with the arrangement. Whether that meets the criteria others on here about that being in the spirit I don't know.

To be honest, the comps are usually run the same day and go straight from one into the other. It's very unusual at our place for the mens event to be any later than 10.30 especially as you can also roll up later in the day should your wish. The women go straight out from 10.38 until all of their field is away

At my club the weekend men's comp could have tee times at to 12 noon.

If the ladies had a comp the same day, they used to always be sent out after the men, which could often mean 4 and three quarter hours at least to get round.
So then it was agreed that they would take turns, and now the ladies play End, Middle or Front of men's field. They aren't keen at starting at 7.30 on the "front" days, but accept that they can't pick and choose.
Works fairly well

Don't start me on midweek ladies' days! :D

Equal access to the course on weekends in action, not just name, is my #1 criterion for judging how "equal" a club is.

If there's no comp and no booked times they have the right to go out anytime they like same as anyone else. We don't have booked times other than for a comp and so turn up go out, or wait in what's normally a pretty short queue

Which part of what Peter Alliss says is old fashioned? Seems like fair comments to me. Some women are happy to pay full fees whilst some aren't and have (possibly) stopped playing.

I think our club is going to find it very difficult to incorporate male and female comps on a Saturday if the members get to vote and implement it. We have solid tee times booked out from 7am to 2.45 each and every week. Thats just the males as it is. 220 Saturdays and Fridays opened to allow another 80 male members to participate in the same comp as the Saturday guys. I mentioned earlier in the thread, I just dont see how its possible and the club will lose members over it.

Well, of course.

I'm really not having a go at your club, just illustrating a general issue which can be particularly pronounced if you have a large men's section requiring a long block for their comps. It sounds like you don't have such a huge imbalance in your demography so your arrangement probably works well enough.

Now you're just trolling.

How about the part that it was OK not having female members because the men's wives were allowed to play?

At our place, anyone can play on the weekend men's competition day, but it's a men's comp so ladies can't compete. The ladies get priority booking for ladies comp day and would never struggle to get the time they want. men can play, but can't compete. Anyone can play in midweek medals etc. That is how the members wanted it and I am sure as demands change, the club will too.
For me, whilst clubs have complied largely with the law, members have found a way to make it work. The ladies can play on men's comp day but don't, and the men can play on ladies comp day but stay away. So the status quo remains, but the ladies have to pay more, which is a shame and hasn't done women's golf any favours.
I don't think the minority, but high profile, men only clubs have done the image of golf any favours in this regard and give a poor impression. In reality, golf clubs are commercial enterprises these days and as demands and perceptions evolve, clubs will also. Either that or they will fail. The main challenge now is to get more women into the game to give us the best chance of making it truly equal. Unfortunately this law hasn't made that any easier either.

Isn't his comment based on what he was told BY WOMEN?

"When I was at Muirfield a couple of years ago talking to a few of the lady members, I said, 'What about this equality? You must be happy about that?'
"'God no,' they said. 'We can come here and do what we like, we can play golf and don't pay anything.'"

His suggestion was that they should be happy about equality... I don't see how that's old fashioned at all...... maybe you can't read well with that huge chip on your shoulder.

As I said though they're going to have to, if it comes to it, look at maybe running both over both weekend days.....

Homers club must have a small make membership to only need 2-3 hours for comps our comps on a Saturday are booked from 7am to 3pm most Saturdays during the season so, if it were to become an issue at mine, we would have the same problem.
