Probably sounds like a stupid question but how do you actually work out your handicap? I always thought that you handed in 3 scorecards and lets say par was 70 and you shot +10, +12 and +14 then your handicap would be 12 as that is the average of the 3? But then Ive seen handicaps like 8.8 and 11.4 so how do you get that off 3 rounds?

No such thing as a stupid question on here. Probably get lots of stupid answers mind. I'm not a handicap expert and there will be others along who can give you chapter and verse or a concise breakdown

You play 3 rounds playing full comp rules and putting everything out.
Then any triple bogeys and above are rounded down to doubles to give a gross score subtract the Sss for tee boxes used give your intial handicap. The best of the 3 cards is the one you are issued with.
The decimal place parts come in after initial allocation and not to start with.

You don't have to work it out, just submit your 3 cards and it's done for you. Handicaps are gauged against SSS not par. It's not an average, it's the best card of the 3, high scores adjusted down to double bogeys. Initial handicaps are whole numbers - decimals come from adjustments in competitions, up or down.

I assume you have to have someone go round with you to mark your card and sign it at the end for you? My best ever round on a full 18 hole course is like 105 so Im assuming my handicap will be about the highest it can be at the moment haha so Im in no rush, was just curious because I saw everyones handicaps in their signatures

Yes you have to have someone mark gour card to confirm it.

One for the handicap-meisters..
During a round for handicap, if all bad holes are rounded down to doubles, why do you have to putt out for a 10?

The same reason some people do when playing stableford or bogey!

If you dont putt out its a nr.

My point is that as the worst you're allowed to score on a handicap card - one of your first 3 - is a double.
You're not in a comp you're merely playing the course.
If you've already racked up 6 on a Par 3 why do you have to continue - the computer will log it as a 5 anyway.....

you don't; but trying to explain such nuances to a new golfer doesn't really make a lot of sense.

I know of a new golfer who was given an exact starting handicap of 10.4 after his 3 cards, doesn't seen the norm according to this thread?

Wimpish (or maybe wise?) H'cap sec'y who really wanted to make the guy an 11, but he was a 10 by the rules. Probably had 1 really good card for the 10 and a couple of pretty awful ones (comparitively).

If guy performed badly in the first comp, he'd be 10.5 so 11.

Found an old scorecard in my golf bag (must be from 2 years ago) and worked out what my handicap would be if that was my best card....It would be....

31.

haha still some way to go before I manage to get a handicap. Especially as I havent played a full round in almost 2 years.

I was given 20.4.

My three cards would have been good enough for a 19, a 23 and a 28! So handicap secretary clearly applied a bit of discretion.
