Played a semi-final knockout match at my club against a 4.3 handicap. He advised me he played an Open event at another Club the day before, and shot two rounds over handicap. He told me his handicap was therefore 4.5, i.e 5 not 4.

Instead of getting 6 shots I got 5. It had no affect on the result as I got stuffed, and the only hole I won was stroke index 6 !

Is he right ?

Yes, its the players responsibility to adjust his handicap, the issue is whether he knows what the standard scratch score was for the comp if he just missed his handicap.

Our midweek medals are often not processed in time for the weekend comp and it is up to the player to adjust his handicap where possible

Dont know if you can put yourself up, you can cut yourself for sure. Lots of time the the CSS is higher for away players who play open comps. Also if he has more than a double bogie it can be rounded down.

You must reduce your handicap if necessary before playing another competition, however, you cannot increase your handicap, that must be done by the Committee/Convenor.

I've just had a summer trying to keep track of all our Juniors away scores and making sure they understand their responsibilities as far as their handicap is concerned.

It's murder ;)

Take a look at 6-2

"If a player begins a match having declared a handicap higher than that to which he is entitled and this affects the number of strokes given or received, he is disqualified"

Sorry mate, your comp guys need a kick up the backside. HC should be sorted for the next medal. Poor job.

Whatever - you still can't increase your handicap before it's published.

Yeah, my understanding is adjust down against stand scratch and can't move up.

Always has been a pet hate of mine with the handicap system.

It's annoying you shoot a score that should buffer and don't because you have to play off a lower handicap either because you should have gone up or because you had to cut yourself against standard scratch, even when that's gone down (especially if you know it); but the card isn't back.

Edit: O/T other pet hate playing to handicap (gross) but getting .1 back because it's a bogey comp and your birdie on a stroke hole doesn't count fully.

Whatever - I've already said you cant increase it. I was pointing out that if a club have a midweek medal then HCs should be sorted before the next medal.

Speak to Region 3 for a sympathetic shoulder to cry on.

You have to declare against the SSS if you're going down as has been said already. However you cant give yourself 0.1 back until the results have been published and the CSS declared.

I have played in umpteen Opens and you just have to wait for the results to come through to your club , simple as that really.

This chap thinks he's failed to make buffer twice on the day but what if the comp goes to reductions only ?? I've waited for a couple of weeks for results to come through before and ended up not getting my 0.1's back as this exact scenario happened. Miserable wet and windy day and so many crap scores that they made it reduction only. You just cant move your h/c back up of your own accord.
