Handicap manipulation - how to address

Depends on the amateur comp. The pair winning the Sunningdale Foursomes (over four rounds) get £700 each. Not sure £50 each would be appropriate.
I disagree.
Even more so when you’re talking that sort of money.
£50 top prize if you don’t like it don’t enter.
I would bet it won’t put anyone off playing there !

The Sunningdale Foursomes isn't really comparable to the average club Open. It's effectively a Scratch event, albeit Pro's are assigned a plus handicap. I can see why the prizes for that are more substantial. For normal Open 4bbb, restricting prizes seems a good way of trying to stop cheats prospering.

Yes but if it’s going to happen you can’t have a two tier system because it’s Sunningdale.
I think it should come from the R&A and not expect clubs to do it.!

What the limit is is open to debate.
But imo the lower the better, it’s a sport not a moneymaking thing now that just encourages cheating.

My club is having houses built on a section of land by the course. The house builder is sponsoring an open at the end of the month, 4bbb. They are promoting it 'with big money prizes'. It's £200 for the winners, £100 for 2nd, £50 for 3rd.

My regular pp asked if I wanted to play and I told him no. With that amount, it will be won with 49-51 points. He doesn't believe anyone will score that amount. I told him I agree, but that's what will win it 😳

You will have to update us afterwards.

Correct…£50 limit suggestion was made without any caveats of any sort - never mind for elite amateur events. That said…I have a feeling that the Sunningdale Foursomes winning amount, or some part of it, may have to have been spent in their shop…🤔

Suningdale foursomes is not going to affect most ams.
Pros can win what’s on offer but the ams should be like everyone else if they decide to cap prizes.

Something needs to be done about the bandits and dropping the prize money is the best idea up to now.
Havnt heard a more logical one.

Some guidance if possible

We have 4 members where it is thought that they are artificially keeping their handicaps high in order to complete (and win) club 4BBB comps and also external Opens (where they have been prolific and won circa 80% where they've entered). It is thought a few of them have a difference of around 10 shots between their PH and ability.

One example below from their EG record..

How would be best to address? The last comp they won as a 4 -ball, the entire room jeered them...
We have the same at our club, and I guess every club in the country does, but would have to be careful what is said as I suppose it could be looked upon as slander, I'm not a fan of whs and as you say a player can up his handicap easily by putting in general play cards, however saying that the whs advise to put in a card e ery time you play, I liked the old system to be honest,

The handicap system is irrelevant, people can manipulate under CONGU, WHS, any other system they come up with. It's easy to miss a few 3ft putts on the back 9 when you have a score going that will lead to an unwanted cut.

With the soft cap (3 shots above lowest index in last 12 months) and hard cap (5 shots) it would take some time to ‘increase’ your handicap by 10 shots.
However if that has been your intention then you would surely have needed to start this ‘scam’ several years ago by deciding to put in only ‘high/false’ scores.

That's true....

As handicap secretary I have access to the playing records of anyone in England, now I have a dilemma, I was browsing some results and saw a player who had won a competition with a fantastic score so I went and had a look at his playing records and was shocked to see that went he played in competitions away from his course he nearly always scored much better than the the rounds he put in at his own course. His handicap did drop, but since his last round at an away course he has put in a number of cards at his own course and his handicap has risen again by nearly 3 shots.
Should I be looking at other peoples playing records? should I flag him up because it sticks out like a sore thumb, and if so who should I tell.

Is it from a local course? If so, drop an email to the handicap secretary at the club and state the facts. Say that you were looking for county stuff?

There is no dilemma. We have a peer review handicap system; part of that is any player being able to request the review of any other players handicap. If you believe there is a problem with anyone's handicap, you should either put in a request (with evidence) directly to their home club handicap committee to review their record, or pass on the request via your county advisor (someone who is not a handicap committee member should submit the request via their own handicap committee for players who are members elsewhere).

Notify his home club hdcp comm. It’s called peer review.
