Gravel path

Would the red blob on the original pic be classed as closer to the hole?
Have you read and understood my post immediately above yours?
Note the words in bold!!

According to your picture there is only one nearEST point of relief and that is on the tree side of the path. If you can't make a decent drop or make a stroke over there, then tough. You have to find an alternative rule. Not one that provides free relief.

Davey, as I said, if the hedge wasn't there, is it possible to drop the ball inbounds (never mind if you would have to stand OOB)? Your not getting relief from the path to somewhere where you could make a shot from. You're getting relief to the nearest point where the path isn't interfering. Unfortunately that point appears to be in a hedge. Because you realistically can't stand in the hedge to play the shot you either have to play the ball from the path or else go back to the tee. You can't decide to go the nearest point where you can get a swing.

Well of course you could drop if the hedge wasn't there but its the boundary hedge and it covers the ground between the path and the road. It wasn't a case of going to the nearest place to make a swing it was a case of being able to make a drop at all and the drop was actually right behind a small tree with no way of going over so would have been easier to hit off the path which was considered but a £90 wedge is not worth a shot

At the end of the short line.

Remember, you are trying to take relief from the path. You don't get relief from trees.

The end of the short line would mean you would possibly have to throw the ball into the hedge then stand on the path to make a swing.

What happens now? There is no point of relief or is the second line the nearest as it's no closer to the hole orrrr call unplayable orrrr go back to the tee?

Yes and that's all I needed to know, at least I didn't do what 99% of other golfers would have and kicked it onto the grass.

I would suggest 1 per cent would have kicked it onto the grass

You play it off the path or take a drop under penalty no nearer the hole

One more question... If its impossible to drop behind the path without standing in the path should that point of relief even be classed as a point of relief. If the drop that was made is the only nearest point of relief available isn't that the nearest point of relief.

If you believe 99% of golfers would cheat then you play with the wrong golfers.

I've always said I never enter comps to win but to lower my HCP only... I compete against myself. Believe me Phil there are a lot of golfers playing in comps who couldn't give two  about breaking rules. Most of us on here are here because we take the game more seriously and most of us on here would be honest players.

If you cannot take full relief then it isn't a point of relief. Standing on the path means you are not taking full relief.
