Gravel path

You do not drop on the npr. you drop within one club length from the npr. It looks like the npr is on the hedge side of the path. One cl would be farther from the path. That's the drop. If you don't like it or can't swing because of the hedge, you have to do something else.

The spot on the far side of the path is not the npr as best i can tell with that graphic.

Yes you could drop in the hedge but the you would be standing on the path to take the impossible shot.

If it is the nearest place you are taking full relief then yes. Is there not a spot behind the path that is closer where not stood on the path still?

The hedge lines the path so no, there is then a road behind the hedge and is possibly OOB I think.

If you ignore the fact the hedge is there then surely the short line is the nearest? .... or the space between the path and the road is much much smaller than what it looks on the map.

Yes but you would have to drop in the hedge to go backwards, even if you did find a spot to drop on your feet or at least 1 foot would still be on the path.
Davey I think your getting confused. If your foot is still on the path then you have found the NPR, as you haven't taken full relief.
If the NPR is right in the middle of the hedge and you have chance to stand there then it's still the NPR....and in that case you would be considering playing from the path.

From those maps picture it looks like the NPR is going to be in huge middle of the hedge ... That's just bad luck.

Wow yes this is confusing... How can you stand in a hedge? The hedge may be too high to even drop a ball in but don't quote me on that.

Have a look here http://www.usga.org/Rule-Books/Rules-of-Golf/Decision-24/#d24-2b-3

you don't have to physically be able to make a shot for it to be your nearest point of relief. You just need to be free from the gravel path. Unfortunately that can sometimes put you into an unplayable lie so either you play off of the path or you go back to the tee.

You must ignore everything other than the path. Determine the nearest point to the ball and not nearer the hole where there is no interference from the path for the lie of the ball, stance or line of intended swing.
The npr may be in the middle of a tree trunk.
From the picture that is almost certainly at the end of the short line for a RH player. It may be at the end of the longer line for a LH player.
The ball must be dropped within 1 club length of that spot (not at that spot and not necessarily on the 1cl arc). It must not be nearer the hole and there must be no interference from the path.
If that makes the shot unplayable that's just hard luck.

The player could be better off playing from the path or declaring it unplayable and dropping 2 cl from the ball not nearer the hole on the grass side way from the trees.

Whatever you do, in such a situation do not pick up the ball until you have determined your best option. Once you pick it up you have burnt your bridges as playing it from the path will now cost you a penalty.

So if the ball was dropped in the hedge you would have to have a foot on the path to take any sort of swing so going behind the path is is not an option.

It's not an option but it doesn't mean you can go to the other side of the path (longer line)

A tip if you choose to play it off the path rather than take an unplayable.
The individual bits of gravel are loose impediments. If you remove the ones surrounding the ball very carefully without touching or moving your ball (and without unduly delaying play) you can, in effect, engineer your ball onto a sort of 'tee'. But don't move the sand or soil particles.
