Golf Random Irritations

All these stories about trying to arrange knock out matches confirms that my decision never to enter any is the right one!
You are only hearing about the horror ones though Steve. You are missing out by not playing matchplay imo.

My rule is always to contact people as soon as you can after the draw has been made. None of this waiting for them to contact you if they are top of the draw. We have our mixed knockout date sorted, my pairs knockout date sorted and HID has already played his as his opponent wanted it to sort it out quickly despite them having a bye for the first round. HID won the match last Sunday and is now through to the 3rd round. He will now have a while to wait for his next round lol

H

This exactly. Very easy for the wife to be blamed as a cop out.

Guy I regularly played with in the eighties appeared, from the outside, to be very much under the thumb. Had to play at a certain time, had to be home at a certain time and occasionally left the course mid round. It had started with post natal depression and progressed into long term deep anxiety issues and, ultimately, his wife was sectioned. I also worked with the guy, the backstory was horrendous.

Out curiosity I had a think back at how many times I found it really difficult to arrange matches. Two serious occasions in 40 years of match plays. Is not all this debate a storm in a tea cup?

Ring as soon as the draw is up. If offering, offer weekends & mid week evenings. Be aware that those on shifts might not be available for two weeks out of four - lates & nights, hence ring asap.

Edit: don’t wait for a call if you’re bottom of the draw. Ask what dates they can give.

Played in the fuddle yesterday. 21 of us. Steady 35 points of yellows with three blobs. After the round one of the lads says “ a PP has said that if anyone gets more than one nearest the pin par three they should be cut 1 shot, should we have a vote on it”. Bottom line it went down like a fart in a space suit. Now the idea behind it is. 20 lads pay a fiver apiece. £100 £20 front, £20, back, £20 overall. £10 each pin =£100. It was pointed out that 2x£10 equals the same amount as a front, back, overall. I disagreed. Others said my maths were crap. When I got the chance to explain. I said 2,3,4,5 people could share ( and have) any of the front, back and overall prize Monies. So they would actually be dragging less than someone who wins 2 x nearest pins.
Having said that, I thought it was a rubbish idea anyway and I said so. Now don’t get me wrong, last year I won 5 x nearest the pins over the years. Some lads, the better players were well into the 20’s with nearest the pins. And good luck to them.
But once more. For me there’s an underlying problem. The money once more seems more important to some than the Crack of having a good 4-5 hours on the course. It is making some folk look selfish and it is not pretty. A few of the lads were quite vocal and they seem to think that 3 or 4 of them speak for the group.
The guy who initially brought up the proposal. It was not his idea. It was another PP who had to shoot off. I saw him in the car park and told him I was disappointed in the fact that he brought it up, and he got the flak for firing someone else’s bullets. He also has major bouts of depression. He agreed. At Six o’clock last night, he only went and put the proposal on our whats app group saying he could set up a vote on the group if we want it 🫣. sometimes I despair. One of the lads responded. He said Quite simply “ it is about the crack and the laugh, not the money”. I said in response “ take a bow son”.
Money, and it’s not a lot, is making some folk look un pretty.
Last off, one of the lads said “ that got a bit rowdy “. I said “ really, wait until next Tuesday when you lot have decided that on comp day you lot are playing off the whites coz that’s what you voted on ( I wasn’t there) and Tash is playing off the yellows, then it will kick off”. Watch this space.

How on earth has that been allowed to happen?? I'd be showing the committee all my evidence of trying to contact him and depending that I be put through to the next round!
This was around 35 years ago. I was was a relatively new member and did not know what to do back then and did not want to rock the boat.
I am told there was a time when if you stood on the tee at 2pm on the last day of the round and the player did not show you could claim the match.

When I played in a snooker league they had a really good system. The home player was given a post card with space for 3 dates and times which he sent to his opponent and they had to select one and get back to advise which by sending back a post card they had been given or agree a different date/time, if the match was not played it was awarded to the home player. I never had a problem when playing in that league for over 10 years.

Tash, here's my suggestion. 20 lads pay £2 apiece. Reduce the money in, make it less of a thing. The more people play for, the more it becomes an issue. Make it about the golf again.

Exactly. Just don't play silly games, I go into it with the attitude that I want to actually play the match since that was the reason I've entered it. So I'll do everything I can to get it arranged promptly. I think some try and be tricky so they can try and get through without playing. 😄 But they would be very much the minority.

I think the ones who deliberately make it tricky are the ones we all don’t like and moan about.
The person who says they can’t play a certain Saturday cause it’s their partners birthday but can make all other dates is just a normal person who has normal life.

It's an outside guess that the only players wanting Nearest The Pin prize money would be the lower H/C 'ers

Money does some funny things to people.
Play for 50p a man and take the prizes down by the equivalent.
The reward should be the applause and banter when you go up to collect your winnings.
It's funny, but when I play against my mate we do lose buys lunch sometimes. If we played for a fiver it would actually work out cheaper, but doing it for lunch rather than a monetary value makes it feel more honourable and less cold-hearted somehow. If one of us doesn't have time for lunch that day we just do it for the drinks or for pride only.

The thing with that is the glory is being the winner not the actual money you save.
My old group we often played a match play and you could lose a maximum of £6.
The winners had to buy the drinks though, the amount of times someone won 50p but it cost £20 in drinks was crazy but always funny and shared about.

Oddly enough the person that proposed it is a mid/ high handicapper. 😳👍
What I will Say is that the lower
Handicappers want everyone to play off the white pots. Average age of the fuddle is about 60 plus.

This all day long. 👍 the guy that won the back nine with 24 points and 40 overall had an op on his hand 2 months ago. His first round yesterday. We were rubbing him Telling him
If he has his other hand done he will
Be off single figures. 😂

We have £5 for each nearest the pin and if you win more than 1 then you get a 1 shot cut.

The number of us who play varies but it’s roughly £20 for 1st place and lose 3 shots, £15 for 2nd and lose 2 shots and £10 for 3rd and lose 1 shot.

Entry is £4 or £5 depending how many turn up.

If you score below the group average (stableford) you get a shot back.

So we’re not playing for much and it’s nice to shake it up a bit, have different winners.

The only negative is that the lower handicappers go through cycles of winning, losing too many shots, not winning for ages and then having to wait for their handicap to get back up to something they can score well to. But in the meantime they’ve got the pins to go for.

Not perfect but it seems to work and it’s a bit of fun. Personally I play crap if there’s nothing on it, be it 50p or a drink.
