Golf Random Irritations

As mentioned in another thread, played in a works society day and the round took 5 1/2 hours - we were 2nd to last group. When I complained on the group chat, one of the players in the group we suspected were holding everyone one responded. He said on a hard course (wasn’t hard but lots of blind holes), playing medal on a course no one had played before you should expect slow play. No! I expect slower play not glacial play. He also said that some people use the days to de-stress from work and like a chat as the go round, the golf is secondary. In that case , just go to Costa and have a chat there! I had to bite my metaphorical tongue to stop myself responding as I would have certainly broken the Civil Service code of conduct 😳

It’s a fiddly, hilly course and quite tough for some golfers. A complete nightmare a month ago when it was rock hard and bare.

Playing with a group tomorrow in what’s just a bit of fun before a few beers and food and watching the Ryder cup.
One of the blokes is moaning on the WhatsApp group about the format and handicaps already. And I’m playing with him tomorrow.
It is just fun game with no money or prizes to play for.
I’m considering conceding the match on the 1st tee and just playing stableford

Golf OZ
FYI- Info for all

Our current system will be turned off on Monday 29th September until Thursday 2nd October and games played during this period will not be recorded and therefore will not be handicapped.

Have worked in computers most of my life.....

Find it hard to believe they need 4 days to upgrade the system.....

So I think they are expecting massive failures......

So for 4 days no update on your handicap.....bloody joke.

Old Thorns. Just come back from a 2 days trip and the course was in shocking condition. Pick and place on a blade of grass if you could find one on the fairways, rock hard greens, no grass at all around mounds and bunkers, it was like hitting off dust. Also, the design of some holes is absolutely farcical. All that was missing was a clown and some windmills.

I have played there a few times and it used to be in decent condition (15 years ago).
Some really nice holes but I agree a few very weird holes.
Think they are more interested in the hotel side of things rather than the golf course now.

Some of the fairways could have had a combine harvester go over them and the condition would have improved.

I wouldn't dream of wasting anyone's time putting in GP cards if not necessary, not does anyone I play with.
I would be pretty fed up if this became a directive, golf can be slow enough as it is and I really don't see any point and I never play strict rules outside competition.

Wasting people's time? It takes 30 seconds at the end of the round to attest someone's score. You put your score for each hole in the app on the walk to the next tee. Any "wasted time" is a problem of personal incompetence and not of the system.

On our course when people are playing medals/Stableford 's rounds are at least an hour longer than casual rounds.
I'd rather not waste time marking unnecessary cards if it's all right by you.

I’d be more concerned that a round is taking an hour longer especially a stableford one than the seconds it takes to attest a score.

Not sure I believe that is even possible? As long as people are not marking cards on the green every hole.
Personally I don't play any quicker/ slower in a competition round or a friendly round but appreciate some of people are different

I don't see how a Stableford can be much longer than a casual round? Don't you play Stableford in your casual rounds? Or do you just chip a couple of balls down and not bother putting out?

I often don't putt out. Putts are regularly conceded as it's often match play, The times I am quoting is how long it takes to get round, when playing casual and competition rounds. Not how long it takes me personally to play if the course is free, my last medal round was reasonably quick at about 2 hrs 45 but we had no one in front until the very end and were a two ball.

I never mark cards out of competition but from observation it always takes longer when people are marking cards, more time is taken over putts , provisional balls are played Balls are looked for for three minutes rather than abandoned etc etc.
My casual golf depends a bit on who I play with, but unless someone actively needs a card marking for some reason I won't waste my time marking it, nor do I expect others to mark mine.

Ok, I see what you mean. I guess I'm just so used to putting cards in now that it barely makes any difference to how I play my round. I'm always trying to score well if I put a card in or not.

Isn’t it half the problem that golfers like us don’t put them straight ?

He needs to know it’s not a day on the beach but a sports day out.

Not criticism but people like this are a big problem.👍

Totally agree but as it is a works do and we are very much bound by the Code of Conduct, I would probably end up in front of HR if I pointed out his views were wrong. That is the world I work in unfortunately.

What I would do is, say exactly what I wanted to say, but then put a winky face at the end so you can pretend you were just joking if poo hits the fan.
