Golf Random Irritations

Had that last week too... although a reciprocal not a Soc. Thankfully, no money changed hands. We just played round and didn't really bother putting out
Had a fairly similar issue a couple of weeks ago , we booked and paid for
a 3 ball online. Turned up to check in on the day and could see temp greens in use on the drive up to clubhouse. When we checked in I asked how many temps in use and are told 18! As they were doing maintenance, I asked there and then for a refund as when we booked there was nothing on the website about maintenance or temps in use yet we’re still charged full price.

Pro moaned at me and could not understand my frustration till I point out why am I paying £50 for a green fee when I’m playing no greens and some holes are up to 50yds shorter. He refunded my money and we went elsewhere , I don’t mind the odd temp or being told up front but I do begrudge paying full price for half the course when it’s not been advertised.

When you are in a 4 ball as a green fee and the starter asks if he can let 2 members go ahead, tells us they are good players (even said these guys are big hitters 😂 ) and will be long gone. (no one in front).

Naturally we obliged and though and behold we are stuck behind them the whole round whilst they are in the trees and reading putts for a lifetime! Of course at no point did they consider letting us play through!!!!

I bet the starter was long gone so you couldn't go back and put him right afterwards.

Our usual response to this is "No, we'll tee off as we are next and if we see that the group behind are waiting for us then we will obviously call them through at a suitable time". Never had a problem with that.

Although it's a minority who are abusing the system I can't help feeling that anyone who puts in a GP card is looked at with suspicion and their HI scrutinized....
I probably put in handicap cards in the ratio of 5 GP : 1 Comp partly because we, as a club, are not competition heavy and partly because I play most days...
I do feel a bit "got at" for it.
It's a minority, and probably a very small minority, that abuse the system.
Please don't rar those of us who follow the rules with the same brush as the few that don't...
Agreed on that!
I have never put a GP card in from my home course. I have never played with anyone putting in a gp card at the home club either. There are plenty of qualifying comps, everything else is matchplay for the drinks...

Is this unusual?
I put a GP in as often as I can, home and away, the only time I don't is if it's a comp/knockout/match play or if there is nobody to attest my score.

I would say that the vast majority of people that I play with at LB put GP cards in each time they play too. For me, I use it as a tool to keep track of when I play and where, but also because I know my handicap is current and up to date.

Think this will be the play if we ever get asked again, although its the first time we have ever had it to be fair.

I'm beginning to think you have a point. I'm also thinking there is a need for a clearer directive about this. There's too wide a range of behaviours surrounding this.

Exactly what we do, always thought it was to give a good view of where you are at that moment. What happens if you don't play a comp for months?

Makes the most sense to me. It’s constant accurate reflection of handicap and when comps do come round you’re used to playing with scorecard as so many people crumble when it’s not just a social knock and over estimate gimmes etc so score isn’t accurate to actual ability.

I do a card every time as I’m not currently a member due to work so it’s an EG IGolf card every round until I can join a place in April and even then I’ll happily do a GP card every time

I wouldn't dream of wasting anyone's time putting in GP cards if not necessary, not does anyone I play with.
I would be pretty fed up if this became a directive, golf can be slow enough as it is and I really don't see any point and I never play strict rules outside competition.

It's our club championship this weekend coming, so I was just being nosey to see who was playing, when I noticed the entrance fee for the comp...

350zl about £70!

To play two rounds on my home course, so I'm having a weekend off and and avoid the place, and probably go up Friday and/or Monday (and probably play like god and shoot something that would've won the comp)

Jeez, is there other stuff included in that though?
One nomadic club i'm in also has champs this weekend so we expect to pay green fee but for about £50 we'll get two rounds with buggy, club shirt, snacks etc & 2 evening meals with open bar. Committee do a lot of work to get businesses to sponsor as much as possible to keep costs down

There'll likely be lunch included both days, with water, banana's and protein bars on the 1st and 10th tees and they tend to go heavy on prizes.

Range session you tonight and the pulled shoulder from the “gym” incident from the other days random irritations really playing up. Couldn’t get a full swing in at all even results in a couple of shanks with the GW!

Couldn’t hit driver, 5 wood or anything really over a 7 iron, even then 7 iron to PW was more 3/4 shot with a cut off follow through as just could t get through the ball with it. Probably hit 30-35 shots at most. Ended up letting Mrs M plow through the basket as she’s really getting to grips with the game.

Meant to be playing tomorrow and ball fitting Friday morning but those both look like ropey options right now guess just have to see what happens.
