Golf Random Irritations

Genuine question as I’ve now seen it mentioned twice:

I’m reasonably new to golf. I have only ever changed my shoes in the car park. I had no idea this was frowned on. Have I been committing some unknowing terrible crime? Why is it so terrible?

I wish I was a weekend warrior. How does me saying a boonie makes me sweat so I choose to wear a cap make me lightweight. It’s called trying what works best for you and making sure your comfortable, any fool can just make use of what they’ve got, the smart person uses what works best. Otherwise known as making the best use of what works best for you!! No different to a golfer getting a custom fit to get the kit that works best for them !!

I’ve even had my issued Boonie hat tailored by a Squipper to make sure it performs best for me when I have to use it. I’ll always carry that and a baseball cap and use what is more appropriate to the conditions. Same as on a golf course the hat backwards works best for me 👌

So if you’re ex RAF, Rotary or fixed wing?
Mainly fast jet when I worked on aircraft but moved into rotary later. Still doing rotary as a civil servant

Honestly no idea. We used to have a sign in the car park with this on about 20 years ago, we got it taken down as no one could think of a genuine reason why it had ever been put up,

I assume clubs who still think this rule is strictly necessary for members to enjoy their club all burst into flames during COVID.

Yes you are reducing your chances of exposure to old men in towels wondering around asking if you have any soap

I've been playing for a while now and pretty much always change my shoes in the car park. Nothing has ever been said to me. Most people I play with do the same.

I'm sure there are an incredibly small number of clubs where it might be frowned upon but I suspect that would be the least of your worries at a club like that.

In essence, don't worry. It's become a type of catchphrase on here based on past history. It isn't an issue.

As for why it would be so terrible, or was so terrible in the past 🤷. It's in the category of sock police, dress codes etc for me. I have no idea why it worked anyone up.

I was 22 years in the RAF and was neither rotary or fixed wing 😉

Don’t think it was terrible as such

A few did it for a couple of reasons

One to try and encourage people into the club house

And also to ensure the car park didn’t become a mess with people banging shoes clean by cars etc

But Covid helped most clubs get rid of the rule

I've got a feeling it's a throwback to when we all had metal spikes and they would, over time, rip up the tarmac of the car park..although I may be imagining that..
One club I was a member at decreed that you change your shoes in the changing room as that's where the notices were and there was an outside chance you'd see them...

That’s why you’re a soft hotel lad then spannering those fast birds for the fly boys 😂

I’m intrigued as to what you do in the Civvy world with rotary. Know quite a few lads that went from Mil to Civ literally crossed from one hanger to the other and got a bigger pay day😂

Interesting 🤔 so either Reg, C4i computer geek or Fireman perhaps!

Technically I’m neither of those things but all my work I do is with rotary for JAC and CHF. I spend a lot of time getting cold and wet 😂

The old TG 3 for me , sat comms , tactical comms then onto working with Merlin’s IT

It's one of life's great mysteries. Countless golf clubs have a "no changing shoes in the car park" rule and nobody is certain why.

I'm American.....I can't stand normal golf caps. WAY too stiff in the front where the forehead is, really find it uncomfortable. Haven't tried it on the back of my head....the skin on my face is in bad enough shape without leaving it exposed to the sun. I try to find caps that are more flexible at the front...like running caps.
Bucket hats is the obvious answer 😂

Untucked shirts.
Played behind a fourball last night, all maybe mid 20’s/30, I wouldn’t even say new to the game as all looked to hit a decent ball, electric trolleys, tour bags etc. Just really struck me as these new sort of youtubey type of golfer, shirts all untucked, hats backwards, maybe a bit unfair or a bit of a generalisation there as I do watch a lot of the new YT/media golf stuff, quite like hoodies, joggers, getting away from the old expectations dress wise and getting more young ones into the game. But my god just tuck your shirt in and put your hat round the right way. Looks horrendous.
🤣🤣 If I hadn't met you I'd be about 40 years out guessing your age.

It's only yobs and cads who changed their shoes in carparks.
Golf clubs don't want these undesirable types on the course.
They probably take Mulligan's and don't repair pitch marks.

(I always change my shoes in our car park)

It’s incase when you bend down to put your shoes on your polo doesn’t pop out from your trousers 😂
We allow the changing of shoes in the car park, most people do it anyway. Just checked the dress code for our club, polo's have to be tucked in, no cargo shorts, trousers or denim and caps have to be worn peak forward. We are a regular members club and I don't think the level of enforcement is very high.
I guess some of you wouldn't want to play our course!
